Show The Flood at Portland 0 CHICAGO Feb 5For several days the city of Portland and other points in Oregon have been practically cut off from telegraphic tele-graphic communication From a telegram received this morning by the Postal Telegraph Tele-graph company at Montreal by C B Hos mer of the Canadian Pacific and for Pacifc warded by him to the Associated Press it would seem that Portland is in danger from floods The message is as follows Water is folows now flooding First street knee deep All traffic in the streets is suspended ana the only means of communication is in i small boats The Pacific Postal Telegraph office floor is ofce foor covered with water The river is still rising No news from the south The situation at Portland is undoubtedly due to the rapid rise of the Willamette river I flows into the Viamette just above Portland For nearly a month neary past the hills and mountains of Oregon through which the river flows have been filled with continually falling snow The drifts in drifs some places are fifteen to twenty feet high During the past few days however the warm winds have melted this and the Wit lamette river became a torrent On the Northern Pacific between Nixon and Trout creek there have been several seri ous slides since Saturday Telegraph lines arc also interrupted |
