| Show A MAP OF THE HEAVENS I The Harvard Obserator s Zxpedetiou to Peru is on the Eye of betting Out j Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch BOSTON Dec 15 Harvard observatorys expedition to Peru is on the eve of setting tout t-out probably the best equipped as it is to J be the most comprehensive scientific expedition I expe-dition ever sent forth In prosecuting its sElfassumed task of making a complete map of the heavens the observatory has I found it necessary to establish a branch station in order that the entire sky may be i mapped And for this reason an astro j I noinical plant has for some time been in operation on Wilsons peak in southern California In May ISSb a similar station vas erected at Choica Peru The observers observ-ers at Wilsons peak have collaborated to j the best of their ability and so have those Chosica In the latter case however t climatic conditions have interfered to a I I considerable extent and it has been found necessary to remove thti observatory to a point where the cloudy seasonis at a minimum mini-mum Mr Baily made a temporary location loca-tion in the desert of Atacama one of the driest spots on the earth and nearer the coast than Chosica and it has been concluded con-cluded to establish a permanent observatory observa-tory at a point near the city of Ayquipa To this point Prof W H Pickering accompanied ac-companied by his family and Dy Messrs A E Douglas and R W Vickars as I assistants is about to start |
