DUBLIN Dec IGTho Irish Times says The Pope is considering an appeal sent him by tho Catholics of London praying his holiness to pronounce against Catholics supporting Parnell because of the latters wickedness At Ballynakill today while meetings of the two factions were being held near together the ParachUtes attacked the opposition The McCarthyites led by Davitt Dr Tanner and a number priests repelled them after a spirited defense I Many persons on both sides were injured Parnell presided over the meeting of his supporters i Davitt accompanied by Father OHal i loran was the first prominent speaker that arrived at the meeting in Ballinakill and he took tho stand in the higher part of the square near the church Cheers and coun tercheers were vociferously indulged in by the assembled factions As Davitt began be-gan his speech a wagonette in which were William Redmond M P Father Ryan and other Parnellites was driven through the lower part of the square followed by a cheering crowd Redmond began speaking speak-ing simultaneously with Davitt The advent of another party headed by several priests driving briskly through the street pUt a temporary stop to tne speeches at both meetings The newcomers ranged themselves along side of the car occupied by Davitt amid a chorus of mingled min-gled cheers and execrations Scully took up the speaking and was expressing his views when a great shouting announced the arrival of Parnell and Harrison and a number of supporters on horseback and in cars Parnells appearance beside Red mond was the signal for cheers and yells of Tallyho the fox and l t tys petticoat Amid the din Parnell spoke to the crowd around him He sharply scored Hennessy te antis candidate as 1 man who went to parliament in 1S01 as a Tory supporter of Disraeli and who now wants to go as a Liberal supporter sup-porter of Gladstone Several men made a strong effort to drag the wagonette into the midst of the anttParnell gathering but were dissuaded Parnell follow Parnell and Conner was speaking when a sudden conflict con-flict arose on the verge of the crowd A rush was made towards Davitts car and a general melee ensued A forest of ash plant sticks and black thorns arose and descended in the air where the dividing lines of the opposing factions met Davitt leaped from his car wielding a thick hazel stick and tought his way foot by foot straight towards Parnells wagon receiving and giving numerous nu-merous blows He finally reached tae wagon hatless and with his face badly marked and with his men with him vho also bore traces of the severe usage they had received in their desperate passage between be-tween the two vehicles Standing on the steps of Parnells wagon Daittt uttered a breathless and indestinct defiance then turned and pushed back to his own car surrounded sur-rounded by his faithful supporters and ami the continuous yells and execrations of the two wildly excited factions and with an exchange of a shower of blows Davitt then remounted his car and snoutedMen of Kilkenny I came herein here-in defense of right public meeting and liberty of speech Our opponents sent their blackguards to interrupt our proceedings proceed-ings but we have beaten them back I was never struck by an Englishman but today I was many times struck by my own countrymen These remarks were greeted with tumult uous cheers after which the crowd began to disperse and tae square resumed its normal aspect Parnell and his friends drove to Castle ComerDavitt and Tanner ollowinc their wake At Castle Comer Davitt and Tanner addressed an open assemblage dilating upon the affair at Ballinskill and asserting that Parnell brought a hired mob there to attack them Just then carriages containing the Par nellites passed the crowdwhich hooted and pelted them with mud and stones William Redmond appearing on the edge of the crowd Davitt sent him a message saying i Parnell would agree to agree stand beside him and deliver a speech Davitt would reply to it and would guarantee Parnell a quiet hearing Red mond bore the message to Parnell who instantly in-stantly replied I am not in a position to treat I am only in a position to tight Afterward while the Parnellites were addressing the crowd a number of Davitts followers got together and began hooting The Parnellites closed around the vehicle from wnich their orators were addressing tho people and the police appeared and tried to divide the factious The meeting ended in a scene of wild confusion and Parnell and his friends drove off amid showers of stones and mud Frequent attempts at-tempts to assail members of the party were made and several bags filled with lime were thrown at them Harringtons shoulders were covered with lime and amass a-mass of lime struck Parnell in the face completely blinding him This insult infuriated in-furiated Parnells friends Harrington turned and advancing toward Father Downey who was at tne head of Parnells opponents shouted Coward You are a disgrace to your church The police again interfered and Parnells party finally got away onto the road Par nells eyes pained him so he was soon obliged to stop his carriage and entered a laborers cabin in a fainting condition A local doctor attended him The lime became be-came caked beneath his eyelids and the doctor was only able to remove some of it by using a silk handkerchief and hair oil he found in the cabin Tho physician finally advised Parnell to drive immediately imme-diately to to Kilkenny So he reentered re-entered his carriage and proceeded on his journey But again the pain became so intense that a second halt was made this time at a roadside public house where the doctor made further efforts to relieve tho terrible pain which Parnell was suffering The doctor was able at this place to procure a quantity of castor oil which he poured freely into Parnells eyes I He then tried to scrape off more of the lime using for this purpose the point of an ordinany lead pencil The lime however had became crusted inside the eyelids and time doctor which the crude implement at hand was only able to remove the tortu ing substance slowly and with much difficulty culty The doctor apologized Parnell for causing him so much pain but said it was unavoidable Parneilreplied Never mind I tuo pain do your beat Dont let me loss I my sight Finding he was unable to remove all tho lime the doctor urged Parnell to drive with all speed to town and this was done Arriving at the Victoria hotel Parnell had to be led from tho wagonette to his room He reclined In an armchair apparently sightless and suffering the most intense agony He still remains in the hands of his doctor Surgeon Hackett who attended at-tended Parnell along the road stated tonight to-night that all the lime had been removed but the patient was still suffering intensely in-tensely Ho said ho did not anticipate from the present appearance permanent injury I i to Parnells sight I |
