Show VERY BITTER FIGHT Struggle Between Dubois De Lamar La-mar McConnell and Clag ettA ett-A SUPPLEMENTARY MESSAGE Governor Shoup Having Omitted Mining From His First Effort Sends Another An-other Document BOISE Idaho Dec 13Special correspondence corre-spondence of THE HEHALD Tho Senator ial contest continues to be very exciting Although as yet not a single vote has been cast still on paper three different fac ions bive elected their menThe V men-The southern Republicans claim that Shoup and Dubois will be the menThe men-The McConnell men from the north says it i say-s McConnell and De Lamar and the Jlaggott men today say that it will be Claggett for the long term and Shoup and Dubois for the two short ones In the opinion of those on the inside Uaggettis sure and the probable man from the south is De Lamar The Statesman has begun already to throw mud especially espec-ially against McConnell us the following clipping will show When the guerilla chief made his triumphal entry into Boise last summer he wasted more money in the streets of they cit the-y on brass bands torch lights fireworks and paid supernumeraries iu line than over was in the campaign lund if it had all been left intact Every one who was present will remember the beggarly account of empty boxes which Sonnas opera house presented on that eveutlul evening as they will remember the loathsome form of the outcast as ho strutted his brief hour one th on-e stage They will also remember how conspicuous the better element of Boise society so-ciety were by their absence Toe above is one of many attacks against McConnell which shows to what lengths the Shoup and Dubois men go in their factional fac-tional fight The result of this style of attack will be the eventual split of the Republican party and will improve very largely the chances of the Democrats at the next election It hardly seems possible that a gentlemanlike gentleman-like Sir McConnell who worked harder than any other Republican campaign speaker and did as mucn if not more than anyone man to elect the party ticket can help but feel bitterly the attacks of this his party organ and think that the old fable of the Monkey and the cats paw covers pretty well his case The following is the complete list of the members of both houses with their counties and politics V SENATE Cassia Ada County F A Ramsey R Jobn S Gray R Custcr 11 C members of both parties on the governors mcssacu What is your opinion of the message I a ked E W Jones of Boise county I should consider it rather a noncommittal noncom-mittal document ho replied which of course leaves it without the positive strength that was expected in a message from the executive to the first state legislature legis-lature I have not examined it carefully but can see that it is weak The Republican Republi-can platform which was in substance tho same as the Democratic favoring the Australian Aus-tralian ballot system did not receive the attention expected by the people All he document contains in regard to it is that the constitution guarantees an absolute ab-solute secret ballot and suggests in one line l that it may require additional legislation legisla-tion affording further safeguards There is not one word iu regard to our most important im-portant industry mining and the governor gover-nor does not commit himself or party to any dellnite couro in the great irrigation question As these important questions occupied the undivided attention of stump speaKers during the campaign our people very reasonably expected the policy of the Republican party to be mapped out in the message and advocated I in the legislative halls The people shall however know in a short lime what Republican policy is If the lenders of that party do not define themselves the Democrats will force tho members or the legislature and if not impeded im-peded there the executive also to define themselves so that our people shall know how both parties stand before them I cannot at present hope to give opinions on this document other than what I nave mentioned men-tioned because I have been too busy to examine ex-amine it thoroughly AlIJtrCIATKS HIS KUHOn The governor seems to have appreciated his error in omitting the mining question from his message as yesterday he handed into both houses an additional message entirely en-tirely devoted to the mining question In it he strongly advocates too Democratic free coinage etc and expresses himself strongly in favor of a heavy duty on lead This is al right but why must he wait until his friends tell him to do this He knows the situation thoroughly and no excuse ex-cuse can be made for his omission of mining min-ing from the original message except the natural one as set forth by his party paper the Statesman that silver did not at present pres-ent need any further legislation and this at a time when it 102 und still falling Exoc |
