| Show A MILLION DOLLARS Being Invested in Electric Rail ways in this City f RAPID TRANSIT ON H RUSH The Salt lake Company Have Twentyfive Miles in Operation and Franchises for Forty Miles I is estimated that the street railway companies will expend at least a million dollars in building track and equipping their lines The bulk of this will be paid out > by the Salt Lake company while the Rapid Transit folks are making a good showing of active work on the streets The Salt Lake company has already laid two miles of track to the Warm springs and are placing a double track on Second South and on Sixth East to the Rio Grande Western West-ern depot The First South line runs from I Seventh East to the Utah Nevada railway rail-way They have also a switch three blocks long running from Second to Fifth East The next move will be to equip the Sixth L ward line which runs on Fifth South to I Liberty park with electric motor power This company has twentyfive miles of road L i in operation five miles of which fve mies was constructed con-structed this year and the franchises now in their possession cover forty miles They have running regularly eighteen electric I cars and six mule cars which will soon be 5 taken off to make way for the electric cars The old mule cars are being converted as I fast as possible into trail cars Twenty new Ir electric cars are on the way which with the two extras on hand will give them a rolling stock of forty cars Five of the now cars will be oppn excursion coaches and are supplied with double motors With a trail car they will make a very fine train Every preparation is being made said J S Wells secretary and treasurer of the company to raise 600000 to pay for improvements im-provements already made and those contemplated con-templated Cars equipped with single motors cost from two to three thousand dollars A double motor fully equipped costs 3500 The electric works located on Second East between South Temple and First South streets has been greatly improved and contains four dynamos of 100horse power each This company has the only 500 volt wire and supplies the power for tho sewerage pump station as well as the Burton Gardner factory THE RAPID TRANSIT The Rapid Transit jf oiks are forging south on the State road at the rate of over a mile mie a week The double track will extend from Eagle gate to Seventh South and the single line goes to the city line They are employing eightyfive men and will construct con-struct during the season thirteen miles o if road andexpend 8150000 in cash The company is fortunate in securing as efficient a superintendent as Mr CtlC Upman who served the Chicago Sr Bur lington as its chief engineer and at one 3 time was the superintendent of the Chicago Chi-cago Burlington Quincy Mr Upman goes east next week on business connected with the road |
