| Show HEBER HAPPENINGS Measles and mumps are quite prevalent in this part of the country The weather is warm and pleasant and everything is looking like summer once more Mr John Aird who has been teaching school in West Jordan returned homo on Monday last John E Moulton and Andrew Johnson who were called on missions to the northern north-ern states started last Sunday morning The New West School house two blocks east of Main street is going up very rapidly rap-idly It will probably be one of the finest buildings in Heber when completed Mr H M Aird who has been a district l school teacher here in Heber for the past five or six years will start on a journey to Scotland the 3Qth inst We wish him a pleasant trip and hope he will be back t start school again next winter Last Saturday evening our home dramatic matic association presented the play entitled enti-tled The Border Land or The Indian Girls Devotion to a well filled house the proceeds of which were given as a benefit to the missionaries gven Ball playing seems to have been the main I topic in Heber during the last week On Thursday last the Park city ball club crossed bats with the Hebers resulting in a score of 1 to 20 in favor of Heber Last Monday the Salt Lakers played a game of ball with the Hebers which made them look somewhat down in the mouth The game was the finest ever witnessed in this place The Salt Lakers scored 13 runs t none for the Hebers The ball players of this place must have considerable practice before they can play with the Salt Lake base ball club High water is causing almost as much trouble a the scarcity of water did last year The Provo river and all the creeks around this part of the country are very high Early last Saturday morning the Provo began to overflow its banks and in a short time the road for a mile from the bridge was a river bed for some time What was the cause of this surprising flood is a mystery It is thought by some that the river had in some way been darned up and the water kept back for a time and breaking loose caused it to overflow It was feared the bridge between here and Park city would be washed out but the danger was soon gone On Saturday May 17 the Hober SundayJ school scholars accompanied by almost thi entire town left here at 8 oclock a m t join in a May day celebration After they arrived at the appointed place about four miles from town they were called together by the marshal of the day Thomas Hicken t share in the excellent programme prepared pre-pared for the occasion which consisted of songs readings speeches recitations etc all well rendered The braiding of the Maypole May-pole performed by twelve young ladies robed in white and crowned with beautifufi wreaths was well done The crowd thhP retired to their different camping places and enjoyed the refreshments which each prepared for the repast The greater part of the afternoon was spent in foot racing Prizes were given to the winners all under thirty years of age both male and female were allowed to run Everyone expressed great enjoyment until about 3 oclock when one after another began wending their way toward home MINIMUM HEnCE May 221S90 |
