Show THE DEATH OF A PIONEER William A Empey Passes Away at His Home in St George A telegram from St George conveys the i Intelligence of the death at that place yesterday yes-terday of William A Empey one of the pioneers of 18i7 He way born July 41807 in the province of Ontario Canada He j joined the Mormon church in one of the early years of its existence and in the year 1839 moved to Nauvoo from which place ho was expelled with the remnant of the people peo-ple iri 1S40 In 1850 he wont with George A Smith to settle Iron county and a few years later returned to this city In 1855 tie was in England as a missionary and in 1856 had charge of the frontiers of the fitting out of tho Mormon immigration immi-gration In 1859 ho was called to go St George being one of the pioneers of that part of the territory Father Empey was widely known among the Mormon people who have honored him for his faithfulness his amiable disposition his unassuming manners and his many sterling qualities Called three or four times to be a pioneer ho has been found at the front of the battle in the settlement of this territory and has faithfully borne his share of the incidental hardships and labors After a life of unremitting toil he has passed away at the ripe age of 83 years The deceased was the father of Nelson A Empey of Mrs Henry P Richards Mrs John Clark and Mrs William C Morris of this city others of his family reside in the central and southern parts of the territory He was recently on a visit to Salt Lake and was then feeble His wife Mary Ann is at present in this city She is nearly eighty years of age and is much shocked by the news |
