Show NEW FJREAK L BUILDING Culmer Bros Reverse the Old Order and Build from the Hoof Down Tho Culmer Bros do not do an thing like others i they can do it any other way For over four thousand years mankind has gone along building from thegroun up G F Calmer is an odd genius and has no use for architects nor scientific formulas form-ulas When he built his residence North Main street he did not first call on an ar chitect and discourse on plans but walked on the lot one morning with the masons drew a mark on the ground with his toe marking out the size of the buildinjr ho wanted Each morning as tho building progressed he would give directions for the days work saying ho wanted a door here i a window there When the structure was ready for the covering the carpenters asked him what kind of a roof ho wanted I havent thought anything t b jut it replied I re-plied Mr Culmer with a noncualauce that puzzled the workmen After scratching scratch-ing his head a little he evolved the outline of the present roof which is a mansard with four more rooms than was intended and told the workmen to go ahead and put it on Mr Culmor says that the large fourstory brick dwellling which people see on Main street simply grew from day to day one thing suggesting another an-other until it was completed There was I but one change made in the work and this the taking out of a diamond ornament that Mr Culmer considered out of place in the I front of a private residence The fine Culmer block on First South street was also built without plansthe only I part elevation being reduced t paper being the front 1 I But the greatest revolution in building jyct accomplished js i the construction of 14 4 S t 1 o > building from roof down I has always been insisted that the proper and only method of construction was tram the foun ation up Mr Culnier reverses this and turns the old way upside down and the phenomenon of building the roof first and digging the foundation afterwara can be now seen on First South street in the Culmer Bros new building Whether the top brick in the chimney will be laid first is not yet demonstrated but that the top story is being finished before the basement has been touched cane can-e readily seen The cause for this anomy anom-y in architecture was the fact the Culmer Brothers desired to build a new building without removing their business out of the old one The framework the top story and roof is already in and suspended on six truss girders This enables them to finish the top story and place the building under roof while occupying the lower floor The floor of the first story will be built on jacks and when ready will be raised to its place The building will be three stories high the front of bent plate glass different from anything in the city the glass alone costing cost-ing 1800 The basement wili be lighted equal to any of the store by Browns patent sidewalk lights The building will have steam heat and incandescent electric light |
