Show AN Ut EASY FEELING Prevails Around the Grand Central Depot A CONFERENCE OF LABOR LEADERS Superintendent Webb Presents n Bold Front but He Stauds on Guard A General Strike May Occur NEW Yom Aug 19 There is uneasiness uneasi-ness about tho Grand Central depot this morning and for the first time in several days preparations were made for Webb and Voorhees to spend the night in the depot Some emergency had apparently arisen to induce the New York Central officials to anticipate developments that might require their attention at any moment The cause i of the Central managers anxiety which appeared only in the unusual aversion L to making comment the situation was nearly at last explainable by an event this i forenoon This episode was the interview betwen VicePresident Webb and Chief Sargent of the Brotherhood of Locomotive I Firemen In this conference Webb was II I placed in the situation of doing most of the I talking In 1 cordial manner ho complimented mented Sargent and the organization of which the latter was the head for the manner man-ner in which it had remained true to the Central during the strike Webb I gave Sargent every opportunity to say the firemen appreciated the compliment and would continue in the futuro as in the past true to the interests in-terests of the railroad and not join tho ranks of the strikers But the wily chief 3r r fireman did not say anything of the kind There was an appearance of unwillingness to talk at any kngth on the part of Sar gent This interview caused the uneasiness uneasi-ness Neither Webb nor Voorhees had I much to say Nothing further has been heard froniPowderly or the leaders of the Knights of Labor |
