Show I A PALATIAL RESIDENCE T Joseph Jameson Commits Suicide at His Sisters House 800 Fifth Avenue Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK Aug ISIn the palatial residence resi-dence of Mrs Amos Colling 835 Fifth avenue yesterday afternoon was found the body of Joseph A Jameson the Broad street broker and banker He had hanged himself from a bedroom door in his finea suite of rooms on the fourth floor in the rear Mr Jameson was reputed a millionaire million-aire and the stock was exchange member of the firm of Jameson Smith Co bankers and brokers at Exchange place and Broad street The second member of the firm is James D Smith commodore of the United States Yacht club Mr Jame sons family are out of town and from what can be learned from his friends temporary insanity caused by illness and porary iness perhaps per-haps aggravated by the feeling of loneliness in the absence of his family is thought to have been the cause of the unhappy tragedy Mr Jameson was last seen alive at 5 pm last Saturday In the absence of his wife and family he had been stopping with his sister Mrs Getting The latter is at the Isle of Wight Mrs Jameson and her youngest son Miner seventeen years old are at Scarboro beach The two sons Addison Ad-dison the oldest is a widower thirtythree years old and Alexander twentyeight years old and a daughter Mrs Thomas W Manson were spending Sunday at their fathers farm at Clintons corners eight miles from Poughkeepsie and the second daughter Mrs Myra Murphy widow of Richard Murphy jr son of the excol lector of the port was at Elberon N J Mr Jameson returned home at 5 oclock Saturday called a servant Rattle Purcell and after passing a remark That it was alight a-light day down town said ho would go to his room to r st He went and was not seen again alive He did not appear yesterday yes-terday and becoming alarmed the servant called jpark policeman The actingpolice captain went to the house and entered the brokers rooms through the one unlocked door He found the body of Mr Jameson hanging with a sheet around his neck one end of which had been thrown over the door and tied to the knob The suicide had knelt so as to bring strangulation quickly and his kneds almost touched the floor Tho millionaire had evidently disrobed dis-robed with tho intention of retiring for the night before tho awful impulse seized him He was clad only in a nightshirt and drawers draw-ers The body was taken down and placed on the bed Superintendent Jenks of the Murray Hill hotel a friend of tbe deceased took charge of the funeral arrangements Nothing was found to indicate the cause of the deed Mr Jenks telegraphed t the sons at Poughkeepsie and left to them tho painful task of informing their mother of the sad event Mr Jameson was taken sick three months ago and was still weak when tree weeks ago he was taken with tnroat trouble The latter affliction was so serious seri-ous that Professor E J Janeway was kept in close attendance The trouble increased and the physical pain may have resulted in a sudden fit of Insanity Mr Jameson came from St Louis in 1865 with his brotherinlaw Amos Getting deceased Each is said to have brought 1500000 as the profit of a dry goods business busi-ness brokerage business was opened on Wall street and at first tho firm belonged to the open board of brokers and latterly to the stock exchange The other members of the firm are F N Jones and A F Smith Mr Jameson was a man of domestic domes-tic tastes and was regarded as a conservative conserva-tive and prudent financier His business is said to bo in good shape Commodore Smith was telegraphed at Stamford Conn of his partners death |
