Show The Twelve Oclock Question I To the Ogden Department of THE SAKE LAKE HEn4 I am a former Salt Laker but have been I in Ogden for a number of months past I have been a quiet listener to all that has been said pro and con on the question I now agitating the people of Ogden viz Shall the saloons be kept open after mid night There arc many good people who are opposing posing the idea of having them kept open and yot they all agree that the present law closing themat midnight is a dezd letter that all tho rows fatal and otherwise that have occurred lately have happened after 12 oclockthat is after the saloons aro clcs dthe doors are closedbut while whiskydrinking is still going on and maybe may-be for hours thereafter Now letme give the Ogden Prohibition club a little advice Let the saloons remain open all night By doing this you will have less crime to cope with than you now have If there is trouble in a saloon your po icemen will have free access to them There will be less liquor sold after 12 oclock than there is now There will be less drunkenness after 12 oclock than there is now Many saloon keepers who now sell liguor after 13 oclockup till 2 or 3 oclock in the morningwill close at 12 of their own accord cord If a man wants drink after 12 oclock he will be able to get it He will not be compelled do the sneak act to gain entrance and he will not remain re-main in the saloon for an hour or more after he intended to leave K ifrVifi in Salt Lake are less numerous Fights since the all night saloon has been a fact than they were before There is less drunkenness population considered now than there was when the saloons were alleged to be closed at 10 clock Men do not care to raise trouble when the saloon doors are open and the police can at any moment pounce down upon them Whereas if the saloon doors are closed after legal hours and a row occurs the proprietor of the saloon is interested in keeping the matter quiet because if it is known that trouble occurred after his doors were closed it is prima facie evidence that he was violating the law I really and sincerely believe from what I have seen of the effects of the all night saloon in this city that the city council of Ogden will do a wise thing if they will enact an ordinance allowing the saloons to keep open at any and all times save election days and the twentyfour hours in each week commencing at 12 oclock Saturday night and ending at 12 oclock Sunday night B H J I |
