Show f They Have Locked Horns I Tho Burlington and the Colorado Utah I Pacific which is the parallel western r line of the Pacific Short Line have locked J horns While the fur has not dtp d-tp fly both sides are forming in battle array and a battle is expected to begin at any time The trouble has grown out of the question of which of the two lines will ccupythe caflon of the Grand on Grand river in Grand county Both of tho ieat monied corporations are anxious to secure this point through which to build ifncs now projected from Denvcrto Ogden The trouble is very significant in one respect as it has caustd the Burlington to show its I I liand Heretofore the officials have stren t ubusly denied that they were making a sur W for a line through northwestern Colo OJ 1 J 1 t o t ado but at last they have been compelled to come out In their true colors and ac knowledgo that they are pushing through the heart of the Rockies to Ogden and tao Pacific coast The News printed exclusively several weeks ago the fact tnat the Pacific Short Line had gobbledJLeft Hand caflon near Boulder and also Buchanans pass through which the line would cross the i continental divide This seemed to have caused the Burlington gjoplo no anxiety as they had already decided to cross at Boulder pass But when the announcement announce-ment was made Wednesday that the stale land board had granted the Pacific Short Line a right of way through tho ca on on the Grand river below Hot Sulphur springs it opened e eyes of the Burling ton folks It was an unexpected coup detat The Burlington it seems has been count ing on running their line through the cafion and it was a most surprising stroke for the enemy to circumvent them They were not discouraged in the least but Toalized that whatever vantage they pained in the caflon they would have to fight for A corps of engineers was accordingly ac-cordingly sent to the caflon to run t 10 final I survey and set the stakes but to their astonishment as-tonishment they found tho Pacific Short Line engineers were there and had already dons the work r There was no parleying hesitation The Burlington men went to work and ran their line right over that of the short line clear through the gorge They went so far as to soj their pins right by those of the enemy The news of tho Burlington engineers ac tion was received in Denver yesterday but it did not seem to alarm the short line officials One of them said to a NeWS reporter re-porter I am surprised at the action of the Bur lington but then wo are safe We ran our line first and have secured our right of way from the state land board and that i Something something the enemy has not secured Wo propose to build right through that caflon and we will not nave the Burlington for company either Wo have now captured the key to a direct lino through the bckies and will hold it all Denver News |
