Show In the bcnate I WASHINGTON Aug I9The presiding officer laid before the Senate the resolution submitted yesterday by Quay for a change of rules so as to have a vote on the tariff bill taken on the 30th of August and to postpone till next session all other legislative legis-lative business except the several classes of bills as specified therein Hoar said he desired to address the Senate Sen-ate on the subject but would prefer to do so tomorrow The resolution went over till tomorrow v v The resolution offered I ofered yesterd v lumb instructing t 1e committee j to issue orders that will prevent flie i Lo or drinking of spirituous or malt liquors in the Senate wing of the capitol was taken up and after some discussion went over till tomorrow The Senate bill granting a right of way through certain lands of the United States in Utah and the Houao bill to authorize the secretary of the interior to procure and submit tQ Congress proposals for the sale t the United States of tho western part of the Crow reservation Montana were ten up amended and passed The tariff bill was th taen ujp the i r f 4 1 t 11 < i t pending question being Plumbs amend Is ment reducing the duty on tin plate from 2 210 cents to 1 cent a pound and allowing a bounty of 1 cent a pound on American tin plate After discussion it was with drawn with the privilege reintroduction McPherson offered an amendment othe effect of which would be to place tin plate on the free list Rejected Spooner offered an amendment providing that after the 1st of October 1S92 tinplates tin-plates lighter in weight than sixtythree pounds per hundred square fefejg shall be admitted free unless it shall appear to tho President that the aggregate quantity of such plates produced in the United States during any of the five years preceding has equaled onethird of tb quantityHmported and entered for consumptioa that year Spooners amendment went over till tomorrow tmor row and the next paragraph of the bill re ferring to sheet steel polished planished or blazed taxing it 2J < cents a pound and to taggers iron taxing it X of a cent per pound additional passed without amendment amend-ment The next paragraph referring to tin plates tonic plates and taggers tin and to steelingyols wasagreed to h committee com-mittee amendments r The paragraph as to cutlery having been reached McPherson moved an amendment to strike out classification by value and specific rates and mark the duty on pen knives and pocket knives 45 per cent ad valorem Cullom made a strong speech in favor of the protective tariff system At the conclusion con-clusion Qf Culloms speech the cutlery amendment went over without acton and the tel was laid aside Hoar gave notice of two amendments I which he would offer tomorrow to Quays resolution One was a resolution for a change of the rules which he had offered on I the 9th instant providing that iered bill or resolution shall have been consider a reasonable time it shall be in order for any Senator t demand that debate thereon be closed The other was to include in the legislative business to be taken up at this session the federal election bill immediately immedi-ately after the tariff bill is disposed of for consideration and it shall remain before the Senate every day for three days after the reading of the journal to tlb exclusion of all other business Saturday September 5 at2 oclock voting thereon and the pend ing amendment shall begin and shall continue con-tinue from day to day to tho exclusion of all other business until they are disposed of Adjourned |
