Everywhere Business in Salt Lake during the past i Week was interrupted by the holiday but the volume was quite satisfactory Real estate remains quiet and Inactive building operations are being pushed ahead with Vigor and money in large sums at least IB not in as great demand as it was a few months ago Unseasonable weather retards re-tards trade in some lines that are usually lively at this season but on the whole every Indication shows that Salt Lake is the most prosperous city in the west There are croakers it is true who see hard times ahead but they are few and far between and their predictions are based upon their own inability rather than uDon the signs l of the times In New York much has happened of late to depress business and shake confidence and yet confidence is not shaken and the volume of business is still close to the greatest ever attained The failure of the speculative banks at Berlin was industriously used to depress stocks but witnout avail This country begins to realize says a financial authority that with the only supplies of grain to keep millions In Europe from starvation besides meat cotton and oil which other countries must have the UnitedeStates is in stronger position than any other nation and need not quake at every European alarm Alarm about the money market has passed and no disturb sate is apprehended this year Reports from cities outside of New York are most encouraging At Boston improvement im-provement is soon in many lines and amore a-more active demand The boot and shoe factories are well supplied with orders dry goods are more fairly active though building has been overdone and many houses are unoccupied At Pittsburg the iron market Is weaker glass works are all in operation and coal miners have resumed At Clove land trade in leading branches is good At Cincinnati general business is active but heavy lumber failures cause some uneasiness uneasi-ness in that line Chicago reports merchandise mer-chandise sales much increased the cold weather having helped many branches and while receipts of corn cured meats lard butter and cheese and cattle show some decrease gain appears to flour and wheat 25 per cent in oats 50 per cent in hides 75 per cent in dressed beef and fourfold in rye At Milwaukee St Paul Kansas City and St Louis trade has distinctly improved with colder weather and is fairly brisk at Omaha and in all lines at St Louis strong but the car famine there grows worse with a grain blockade northward and a cotton and coal blockade southward At Nashville trade is fair and money close At Memphis business is rather sluggish but at Now Orleans good in groceries and provisions with better prospects receipts of cotton being heavy of sugar fair and trade in rico steady At Savannah and Charleston trade is somewhat depressed apparently by tho very low price of cotton and money is rather tight At Jacksonville business is very brisk but at Richmond dry weather prevents marketing of tobacco and low prices and short crops of cotton but manu factures are active A distinctly better tono in woolen goods is due to the appearance of a spot demand clothiers having worked off old stocks to a great extent The demand for overcoat ings and heavy goods is stimulated by the cold weather Wool sales continue of good volume though western fleece are rather weaker Exports of Merchandise Exports of merchandise from New York in three weeks of November has been 825 251719 in value against 15545237 last year an increase of 33 per cent while Imports Im-ports for November thus far are about 18 per cent smaller than a year ago which I points to an enormous balance to be settled by other countries in specie One danger is that a great quantity of wheat is now carried abroad as well as in this country on margins and loans and there is a possi bility that a sharp decline might cause some trouble The Business Failures The business failures occurring throughout through-out the country during
