Soon I after the convening of court Judge Powers began the closing argument for the defense He continued his argument during the entire day and concluded about 530 last evening His speech was s masterly effort and his closing words to tho jury wore touching and pathetic Prosecuting Attorney Allison followed Judge Powers with tae closing argument for the prosecution At the nicht session of the first district court last evening Attorney Allison closed the arguments for tho prosecution at 1015 oclock Judge Miner then began reading the charge which took till exactly 1 oclock snd the jury retired The charge was a strong ono The fire department was called to the Boston shoe storo at 10 oclock last night The blaze started in the rear of the building build-ing and destroyed a largo hearing at 2 olock p m tomorrow tomor-row Tries to Inn Himself The man calling himself Brown arrested come time ago on the charge of having in his possession a complete outfit of burglar tools and who a few days after was convicted con-victed and sentenced to six months imprisonment impris-onment in the county jail by Judge Fitzgerald Fitzger-ald made a futile attempt to take his departure de-parture to other climes by hanging himself tj a heating pipe in his cell in the county jai about noon yesterday Shortly before the occurence took place a kid that had just served cuthis sentence for some trifling offense informed Deputy Sheriff Lampert that Brown was tearing bis clothes to pieces Tho deputy went down into the jail and cure chough Brown had torn nis pantaloons into strips and in fact all his other wearing apparel He had tied tho ends successively together and was squirming around trying to get his head Iastened in the loop ho had made He had one end fastened to the beating pipe and the deputy peeping through the bars witnessed the man oeuvers of the convict He perched himself him-self on his bed and when he thovujfet every tboUt thitg was In readiness to take his leave he swung his body off of it but the loop he had fixed was not secure and gave way Deputy Lamport then made himself known and told Brown that if he wanted to hang himself he would go and get him a rope The deputy then went up stairs and informed in-formed the sheriff and jailor of what had taken place In a few moments they all went back and found that the prisoner had darkened hIs cell by putting a shirt over his window and k ° was hanging beneath the heating pipe Somehow the key to the prisoners coil was left above and the deputy ran up tairs after it Ho returned as soon as 4 e asible and the door was opened and the wouldbo suicide out down Brown fell back apparently dead Some water was secured and after throwing it in his face he began to gasp and in a few minutes ho sat up a vigorous kicking and presently revived Brown has been very troublesome to the sheriff and a great annoyance to tho other prisoners After the fight he engaged in with Allen one of the prisoners on Thanksgiving day the sheriff informed him that ho had been so troublesome that he proposed to weld chain around each ankle Brown has bragged that he would make his escape and it appears he has made systematic sys-tematic plans for it which being frustrated frus-trated caused him to give up in despair and the attempt at suicide was the result The Sumlny School Convention ConTnton I The sixth annual shortly after 10 oclock yesterday I yes-terday by a telephone message Dens smoke was rising above the building The boys were promptly on hand with the hos wagon chemical engine and the aerial truck Upon investigation it was found that the soot in the smoke stack had become be-come ignited The smoke stack which is I constructed of iron became red hot in tho boiler room and ignited the wood worK
