Show TRADE IX THE EAST AGeneral Resume of the Business West of the Rockies Another week has brought still better crop prospects a continued increase the volume of business more definite assur ance of the passage of the tariff bill with it essential features unchanged and therefore more confidence in those industries indus-tries which look for help from that meas ure On the other hand the passage of a free silver coinage bill in the Senate has raised some doubtwhether the two Houses may not finally disagree Expectations based on currency expansion are therefore a little less confident But the money markets mar-kets work easily everywhere and the continued con-tinued exports of gold as yet cause neither disturbance nor apprehension Though over two million dollars has been sent abroad the rate of foreign exchange does not justify the operation which is attributed attrib-uted to special purposes and manifests no tendency to advance to the exporting point Of late some foreign buying of stocks has been reported which tends to check the outgo of specie Reports from all parts of the country continue encouraging Seasonable goods are in better demand with warm weather at Boston boots and shoes and leather sell freely at linn prices sales of wool have been 2000000 pounds with slight concessions conces-sions t buyers dry goods are quiet and woolens particularly dull and the large supply of lumber forces shading of prices In spite of the large demand Philadelphia has a very healthy trade in leather and boots and shoes with quite retail boom a quiet dry goods market worsted and womens goods being in fair demand quiet in groceries paper printing and drugs and chemicals a demand exceeding supply for Sumatra and Havana tobacco and good iron and coal trades Chicago has receipts exceeding last year in grain meats hides and wool and larger sales of dry goods the fall clothing trade opens well and the trade is excellent and in general the prospect is good for more than the usual fall trade St Louis reports trade of large volume in nearly all lines with prospects improving Minneapolis lumber manufacture surpasses previous seasons r inougu me iiour uumauu is weaK anu au Paul notes better trade with bright crop prospect Milwaukee finds the best of crop weather helping trade and at Omaha business is active Speedy settlement of strikes at Denver is expected and business is good but at Detroit strikes still curtail I local trade and wool moves slowly Pittsburgh Pitts-burgh notes some sagging in the iron and steel market and window glass works have closed for the season but Hint glass is active ac-tive Otherwestern and southern reports are of the same general tenor better weather and brighter crop prospects stimulate stim-ulate trade in all directions and collections collec-tions are good The great industries are waiting action in Congress which is by many expected toe to-e them a new impetus But iron is fairly steady at about S17 for southern and SIS for northern No1 and sales of rails are at 31 for large orders deliveries t Juno 1st this year having been 593000 tons The wool market shows some signs of reaction prices having gone beyond the ability of manufacturers to consume with profit until desired results from higher duties on goods have been realized and as this cannot be for some time to come the tendency is t wait except as to wool suited for worsteds and lightweight womens goods The cotton manufacturer waits the departure of artificial speculative prices for cotton which has declined only a sixteenth during the week In all its departments de-partments the business in hides leather and boots and shoes is active and promising promis-ing with better prices maintained Copper Cop-per advances production here having been overtaken by consumption in the opinion of many lead is quiet but strong tin is weaker abroad and here and there is a stronger tone in the coal market with expectation stonger market pectation of an advance In pries July 1 The state of foreign trade is fair for the season Exports of breadstuffs provisions provis-ions cotton petroleum and cattle for May amounted t 3C412S74 or 5 per cent more than last year in spite of a great decrease in cotton a other items gaining For three weeks of June exports from New York show a decrease compared with last year of2S per cent and meanwhiio imports im-ports being temporarily swelled by prospect pros-pect cf higher duties exceed last years by I 200 percent But at this season some excess ex-cess of imports is usual and in a short time new and large crops will begin t come forward Wheat has declined a quarter for the week with no change in corn and with pork 2 cents per barrel lower The alleged market for coffee is unchanged and oil is a shade higher with butter and eggs but sugar has declined an eighth for raw and refined Sugar trust certificates have dropped 1 cents for the week in spite of larger duties on refined reported in the Senate tariff bill and other trust stock have been weak But tho market for railroad securities has also tended downward in part because of exports of gold and an idea that free silver coinage might cause disturbance but more because the war over eastbound freight rates does not get settled and the Grand Trunk competition grows more serious The earnings of railways nevertheless continue con-tinue very large and reflect the great increase I in-crease In business throughout the country as thC clearings through banks outside New York which exceed last years for the latest week by 150 per cent Prices continue con-tinue low with little change except in vegetable veg-etable and dairy products The money market here has been steady at 4 per cent on call and the treasury has disbursed during the
