Show A Bitter Fight Is Looked For There has been considerable talk during the last two or three days over what if true suggests a breach ot the interstate commerce law The details as communicated communi-cated are given for what they are worth and are as follows I is alleged that the Union Pacific company recently shipped two carloads of canned goods from this city to Trinidad Colo by way of Portland Ore Cheyenne and Pueblo 1 it were done the goods were sent from two and a half to three times the distance from San Francisco to Trinidad over the Sunset route Canned goods are put up in as thin cans as possible to save weight and so the risk of damage is considerable That a shipper should take the risk of loading his canned goods on board steamer at San Francisco unload them at Portland on to freight cars and send three times as far as necessary simply out of personal consideration con-sideration for the company is hardly credible and so the open question is what inducement if not a heavy cut in rates was offered The Union Pacific people deny the story entirely and say it is absurd and is simply the result of banter between railroad rail-road freight solicitors They not only deny the statement but state that they invari ably send such shipments over the Central Pacific by way of Ogden A shipment via Portland as described is quite possible as the Union Pacific now controls every mile of road from that northern city over the Oregon Short Line and clear through to Trinidad Colo A railroad man stated yesterday that a bitter fight between the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific is likely to be inaugurated in-augurated very soon and that this is the inning > of it In the absence of positive proof from either side the statement and denial are reported a they were receivedSan Francisco Chronicle |
