Show The Charleston and Baltimore WASHINGTON Dec r23 Arrangements are being made today at the navy department depart-ment for fitting of the two new vessels recently re-cently added to the navy the Charleston and Baltimore with their proper coinple ment of men There is some difficulty about equipping the Charleston now at Mare island California There are not enough men by about one hundred on the Pacific coast to give the ship her full allowance allow-ance and it will probably be necessary to send part of the crew overland by rail I This is very expensive and will be a heavy draw on the meagre resources of department for traveling expenses It was at first thought that arrangements could be made for sending the men down to the Isthmus of Panama from New York by the mail steamer and then transfer them across the narrow strip of land to the Charleston This would be much a cheaper process but it was found that the mail steamer company com-pany would not take mail until late in January Jan-uary and so the scheme was abandoned The Baltimore vvillreceiv her complement in about ten days and will then steam down last from touches Philadelphia to Norfolk to receive the I I |
