Show St Ignatius Building S F Burned SAN FUAN Cisco Dec 28A fire occurred to night in the old St Ignatius church building Market street opposite the Baldwin Bald-win hotel occupied on the first and second floors as stores and offices and the upper floors by roomers An old lady Miss Copeland Cope-land was overcome by smoke and fell into the flames and perished Mrs Evans who attempted to rescue her was severely injured in-jured Two firemen were badly injured by a falling ladder After the fire was out it was found that two more persons I per-sons had perished The body of Mrs Crowell a roomer in the attic oi the building build-ing was found lying across the threshold of her room door where she had been overcome over-come by suffocation The body of a washerwoman wash-erwoman who was known by the name of Ida and who used to room with Mrs Crowell was also found near that of Miss Copeland Both were burned beyond recognition Mrs Elizabeth Evans who went t the rescue of Miss Copeland was overcome by smoke and fell fainting to the floor Captain Lees however rushed into the building and carried her out in ac unconscious condition unconscous conditon She will recover Fireman Logan and Policeman Williams went to the rescue of Mrs Crow ell and her son who were in the attic Logan was overcome by smoke and fell unconscious to the floor Officer Williams took young Crovvell out and then returned for Logan whom he carried into a place of safety He then returned for aeSt f ai I Mrs Crowell but was almost suffocated and was obliged to retreat to save himself Logan soon recovered and went to work Later estimates place the loss at 40000 which is covered by insurance |
