Show Jr. Colleges Pick-Players F By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL - Just as the local high school players are recognized at this time of the season with post season all-Star all-Star picks, the junior college ranks also pick their best players and honor them. DIXIE, SNOW, College of Eastern Utah and Ricks are all members of the Inter-mountain Inter-mountain Collegiate Athletic Conference and all of them are using players from the Davis County area. Several of the all-Conference all-Conference picks this past season, which was named this past week, played their high school football in the County system. THE FIRST team quarterback quarter-back is no stranger to fans in this area as Ben Bubak from Dixie was picked as the top signal caller in the league. Ben played his prep football under Gary Hansen at Layton High. Ben, you'll remember, was at quarterback for the Lancers when they lost that heartbreaker to Olympus in the state semifinal game three seasons ago. He will always al-ways be remembered for his passing to his favorite target Rick Snow at the Layton school. Another first team pick from Layton was linebacker Wayne Kittrell who also played ball at Dixie. Wayne was also an outstanding wrestler for the Lancers in high school and many were surprised when he opted for football over wrestling but football was always his first love and he is one of the outstanding out-standing linebackers in the college ranks this past season. He too was on the Layton crew three years ago when they got to semifinals of state before being knocked out by Olympus. A THIRD Dixie player on the first team all-Conference club which played ball in the county, is big Bob Berrera from Clearfield. Bob never did the big credentials in high school since the Falcons didn't have an outstanding season in his senior year but Bob had the desire and talent to play college ball. His own coach calls him "the best defensive tackle in the conference." Bob is being looked at by several four year colleges and could very well go to play another two years. Bountiful High was represented in the all-Conference all-Conference picks with two players from different schools. Ron Graham of Eastern Eas-tern Utah was picked as a defensive back and Kelly Evans of Ricks was picked as a defensive tackle. RON GRADUATED from the Braves a year ago where he was a linebacker and the kicker for Coach Paul Waite. A very good linebacker in high school, the college people felt he was too small for that sport in college but he made the move to defensive back without much trouble. Kelly Evans was the veteran at Ricks despite being be-ing in his first season for the Vikings. Kelly was all-State at' Bountiful a few years ago and then played freshman ball for Utah. He then served a LDS mission and decided to go to junior college first. He has excellent size and has drawn the attention of several major college scouts. DAVIS COUNTY fans can be proud of the type of football foot-ball the local high schools play even the college people are picking up on their talents. |
