Show FIRE CHIEF RETURNS FMJMFII Took Prominent Part in Proceedings; Pro-ceedings; Talked on Fire Prevention. TV. H, Bywater, fire chief of Salt Lake, arrived liome yesterday from New York City, where he attended the forty-first forty-first annual convention of the International Interna-tional Association of Fire Chiefs of the World. The meeting was held September Septem-ber 1 to 6, Inclusive, and was attended by more than 1500 fire chiefs, representing represent-ing nearly every city In the United States and many cities In the old world, including cities of England, Germany, Holland and .Egypt-Chief .Egypt-Chief Bywater took an active part in ail the business of the convention and brought his home city and state into especial prominence hy being one of the few spcalcera who talked at the elaborate elabor-ate banquet which wound up tho conclave. con-clave. "Fire Prevention." tho subject which Is perhaps the llvest of any just now In fire department circles, was his toplo, and he told the chiefs of the world how Salt Lake has maintained a system of inspection for eighteen months by which the danger of fire Is reduced to a minimum. He also pointed out the value of the exchange bt Ideas secured In such conventions. Other speakers at the banquet were Fire Commissioner Johnson of New York, John Kenlon, chief of the New York fire department, and A. J. Doyle, former fire marshal of the state of Illinois. According to the chief, the most interesting inter-esting and instructive portion of the convention was a demonstration of gasoline gaso-line pumping engines whioh took place at Fifty-fourth street and North river. For twelve hours the engines were kept going in tho test, and the Salt Lake chief was there every minute of the time. The engine was the same ns the one used here ton the largest motor truck and ran the full twelve hours without a stop or delay. The chief says ;hc considers this important, as It will tend to standardize this piece of fire fighting apparatus. In the- latter city he attended the convention of the International In-ternational Association of Smoke Inspectors Inspec-tors and heard an address bjr George H.
