Show Certificate Of Achievement 1 GSD Cited For Energy Efforts MAGNA. Dr. Carl E. Pettersson, representing Granite Schoolof District, received a certificate achievement last week from Gov. Scott Matheson in recognition of outstanding accomplishment in reducing energy use per square foot of educational buildings. The award was presented at the second annual Community Energy Management Conference held at Brigham Young University. Matheson praised the influence that energy management has had on Utah schools. He pointed out that local school leaders have recognized that dollars saved through energy management and conservation can be used where they are needed most, to educate children and plan for expansion of the public school system. The largest school district in the state, Granite has 60 elementary, 14 junior high and seven high schools, plus additional structures, giving it a total of more than 100 buildings. In 1973, Granite district, under the direction of Dr. Pettersson, initiated an energy conservation program which included publication of a energy survey and conservation manual. The manual, among other items, addresses energy use in each of the districts buildings. The publication was distributed to each building administrator and subsequently to all 40 school districts within the state. Since that time, Granite district has conducted and participated in numerous training seminars and workshops, including a three-da- y energy management seminar, completion of an energy conservation 338-pa- service audit on district buildings in partnership with the State Board of Education and in Utah Energy Office training seminars with Mike Glen of that office and Jerry Zenger of the UofU. A pilot program was initiated in 1977 on three school buildings which included a technical audit conducted by a consulting engineering firm. The resulting recommendations of the technical audit were im- plemented. In 1979 when the federal government made grants available to school facilities on a 0 participation basis, the district was able to apply for both technical audit funding and energy conservation measure funding under the first cycle of the federal program because of its early emphasis on the subject. 50-5- Is GRANGER.
