I fp Joe Marsh Hay. you ever thought bow much a million dollars really is? SnreM an awful lot of nice th.ngs a fellow could do with a million dollars . . . if he had it. A million dollars J8 a lot of money. Just think ... it would teke about three weeks, counting as fast as you could 24 hours a day, juet to count up to a million. I read in the paper the other day that the beer industry pays more than a million dollars a day in taxes . . . Federal, State and local. Every day . . . more than a million dollars. I guess the government is glad to get that help these days, what with a war to win and pay for. Of course, not all of that beer tax money goes to the Federal government. govern-ment. Quite a lot of it goes to the States and is used for such useful purposes as public health, emergency emer-gency relief, old age assistance, education and public welfare. Farmers surely ought to like the beer industry, too, from what I hear. Last year the brewers bough nearly two billion pounds of bv. ley malt and nearly half a billio pounds of corn and corn produeh And plenty of rice and hops, tot. That's a lot of farm prodncts! Back around '33 and '34, when tW tough old depression was hittiW all of us pretty hard, farmers tn certainly glad to sell those ertr, crops that beer bought from tbe. And come to think of it, when beer came back it made lots of new join for plenty of other people, too. Cib folks and country folks both. If I hadn't gone in for this wriU ing business, I think I'd like t have tried my hand at the brewing business. I'd like to be making a fine tasting tast-ing beverage that helps the public treasuries so much and that people can rightly call the "beverage at moderation." That moderation in-cidentally in-cidentally is another of the fine things about beer. No. 42 of a Series Copyright, 1942, Brewing Industry FouaAaio.
