Show Pioneer Celebrates Birthday . s I Celebrates Birthday I ' ' ' ' y - Mrs. Rachel C. Philips gets ready to cut her birthday cake holding eighty candles, during a recent anniversary and holiday party given by her sons and daughters, to specially honor her on the occasion of her eightieth birthday. Mrs. Rachel Crump Phillips, a resident of this vicinity many years, recently celebrated her eightieth birthday with a reunion of her family, who met in a holiday holi-day social. In addition to honoring their mother, the group exchanged gifts and enjoyed games and lunch. Mrs. Phillips has known all the hardships of pioneer life, having come to this country with her parents par-ents at the age of five years. She was born December 20, 1867, at Garoway Hill, Herfoshire, England. Eng-land. The family settled in Spanish Fork, where she spent her girlhood. girl-hood. She remembers walking to Springville, when a very young girl, to bring eggs and butter to the old Bringhurst store, which was the only store offering cash. At that time eggs were 15c per dozen and butter 25c rcer pound, and to sell them for cash was to deliver them, mostly by walking, from Spanish Fork. A few years after her marriage to Jonah Thomas Phillips, June 16, 1892, in .the Manti temple, they moved to Hobble Creek canyon to take up ranching. The land, covered cov-ered with willows and brush, had s to be cleared by hand and involved months of hard labor. Mrs. Phillips Phil-lips added to the family income by making many pounds of butter, which she sold in town. She has always been active in church work, serving in various capacities in the Relief Society. After the death of her husband she moved from the canyon to reside at Fifth East Fourth South street. Her sons and daughters, all of whom, with most of their, children, attended the anniversary party, include: in-clude: Mrs. Myrtle Bird, Mrs. Lizzie Billings, Mrs. Iva Hodson, Floyd, Ralph and Victor Phillips of Springvilla; Miss Lucy Phillips, a teacher at Snow College, Eph-raim. Eph-raim. Mrs. Phillips has also 26 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A highlight of her birthday celebration cele-bration was the beautiful 3-tiered birthday cake .which was specially decorated, holding eighty candles. Approximately forty-six relatives and friends attended the party. Mrs. Phillips was also honored at a recent meeting of the Daughters Daugh-ters of Utah Pioneers, who paid special tribute to her during the day's program. |
