It's just possible there might be some news items missing miss-ing in this week's paper or there might be some errors, or other violations of good journalism. . . We who write, edit, compose and print your newspaper each week feel we have a fair excuse for any such inefficiencies this particular par-ticular week. You sere, we are installing a tiny 13-ton Miehle press to print your future newspapers on, and our back shop is about as muddled and disarranged as your own home is, come spring house-cleaning time. . . Our shop force has been seeking and searching for various and sundry items so badly needed on press day but just try and find ttiem. I am extremely happy to report that you good people who subscribe to, and read this neswpaper have made it necessary to remove our little 2-page Lee press for our 13-ton toy, which will print four pages at a time, and we hope, do a better job. v E v OUTSTANDING LEADER. CITIZEN HONORED BY HIS CHURCH .... I was thrilled Monday morning, as I'm sure thousands of other Utahns were, when Dr. Adam S. Bennion was sustained sus-tained a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. . . I was thrilled because Dr. Bennion has, for the past twenty-odd years, been an ideal of mine, due to his keen ability to stimulate the thinking and activity of people, regardless of creed, race or position in life. It is not necessarily because of my membership in the , LDS church that prompts me to thrill at Dr. Bennion's high calling. . . Sunday morning was the first time I have heard him address an entirely religious group, but I have thrilled at his eloquence at numerous civic, political, educational edu-cational and trade conventions and ' conferences. Dr. Bennion has a unique talent in being able to inspire in-spire people an atribute that should make him a tremendous tremen-dous success in the religious field, where his time and efforts ef-forts will, no doubt, be directed in the future. v E v A GOOD INVESTMENT WON'T YOU PLEASE HELP? The American Cancer Society is again conducting its annual campaign for funds in this community. In considering consider-ing the request for contributions, most people, it is pretty certain, will ask themselves just how important is it that they give to this cause. Can they also' ask with justification, "I've given year after year and still we're threatened by cancer?" Each man's answer will be his own. Our answer is based on the one word, "hope."' It must be remembered that the long hard road of research re-search can turn at any moment. A look at the record of scientific achievement will demonstrate this better than anything else. The death rate from rheumatic fever declined 53 per cent between 1944 and 1950, the last year for which figures are available. Deaths from pneumonia and influenza declined de-clined 47 per cent in the same period. From 1944 to 1949 appendicitis deaths were cut 53.7 per cent and the scarlet fever dath rate dropped 70 per cent. The over-all death rate in the U. S. was reduced 15 per cent from 1937 to 1950. This represents a saving of 1,763,347 lives. This tremendous improvement is directly due to the development of the sulfa drugs, penicillin and other antibiotics. anti-biotics. But these wondrous jailers of infection did not leap full blown from the minds of their creators. They were the results re-sults of many patient years of plodding investigations. And so, to, can it be with cancer. If the public can provide funds to keep the scientists at work long enough they will find the complete answer. Already, half of those who develop cancer could be saved by early diagnosis and prompt treatment. More than $4,100,000 was allocated to research by the American Cancer Society in 1952. The ACS expects to' increase in-crease the figure this year. When you are asked to give, do it with great expectations expecta-tions ... with the knowledge that cancer can be conquered and with the ever constant hope that it will be soon! 30 |
