A Joke I going thu rounds ol the press about the girl whose mimic toucher wished to compliment her but of w hom he could only say thHt she pliiyed the rests excellently This Is, however, real piiine of a hort, for It Is not every yo itiK student of music who Is careful about . laying the reHts veil. Indeed a grout many players seem to lot-get tliut the rents are Just as much or the piece as Is the punctu lion in a sentence Nowadays people peo-ple do uot put In so much punctuation s they used to do, hut the pauses In Ihe voice are there Just the same and are readily understood hy Rood readers, read-ers, and always regarded The rests In music are like the pauses In reading read-ing that aie needed to give expression expres-sion to the aentences. If the player slights the rests or extends them too long the whole effect of the musical sentence Is spoiled. NOTICE TO WATER USERS. Slate Engineer's Office, Salt Lake City, Utah, September 9, 1911.
