Show Explaining Income Tax Questions (Note: The Salt Lake Telegram has compiled the following questions, ques-tions, which have been answered by the state tax commission and presented for the benefit of the people of the state): q Must a person under 21 years if age pay an income tax ? A A single person under 21 years f age earning more than $1000 net a ear must pay the income tax on the mount over the $1000. A married erson under 21 years old, living with he husband or wife, must pay an in-ome'iax in-ome'iax on anything over $2000 net. Q Must a person under 21 years f age pay the filing fee? A Single persons under 21 who ay no income tax do not pay the fil-ng fil-ng fee. Neither do married persons mder that age who pay no income ;ax. But persons under 21 years of age who pay an income tax must also oay the filing fee. Q Who else pays the filing fees? A Everybody over 21 years old must pay the filing fee, regardless of vhether an income tax is paid or not, xcept that married women living with their husbands and having no independent in-dependent income do not have to pay he fee. Neither do the insane, idiots, he infirm, indigent or wards of the ;tate. Students attending state institutions insti-tutions and in good standing in those institutions do not pay the filing fee. Q Do students in private institu tions have to pay the income tax and filing fee ? A There are no exceptions in these cases and all students over 21 years of age in any private school must pay the filing fee and also an income tax if otherwise liable for tlu tax. Q Suppose a person is mnglc, but has a dependent and has a net incomo of $1300 for the year. What is hi st atus ? A The fact that his net income was more than $1000 for the year makes him eligible for the filing "i the return. The fact that he has a dependent de-pendent and only $1300 income makes I it unnecessary for him to pay a tax. However, he must pay his filing feo of $1.00 and send in his blanks pro- perly filled out. Q Suppose a wife has no separate income and her chief occupation i.4 home-making, how should the question ques-tion No. 4 in form 40-A be answered? ans-wered? The question is, "Is this a joint return of husband and wife?" A In that case the answer would be "Yes," and the next quewtion aWit whether or not the wife has a F"p-'ir-ate income would be "No." Q Would it be necessary for th wife to pay a filing fee in this case? A When she has a separate irf come. Q Suppose a wife has a separate income. Can she file a joint return with her husband? A Yes. Q Will she have to file a separate ' -eturn on her own account ? j A Yes, and she will have to pay j her fil'ng fee. But she will not have I to f 11 out the blanks of gross in-! in-! come, deductions, etc. All that will ba taken care of in the -joint return. Q Is it possible for a single person per-son with one dependent to have a -'2000 personal exemption? j A Yes, the "head of the family" J is entitled to a $2000 personal exemp-j exemp-j tion. A single man with one depen- g I dent may be the head of the family. Q How do you determine who is j the "head of the family?" J A Just as the federal government drcs. A person must be the head of 'ho fain ly in fact. We prefer to ans-, ans-, ver yes or no on spec'fic cases rather than interpret a universal rule.
