The Kifcht Rev. Joseph S. Gbiss, C. M.. D. D., bishop of Salt Lake, was cueat of honor laf t nlpht at a banquet tendered blm by tin: C'hfldren of Mary sodality of the Catholic churches of Salt Lake. The banquet wan piven at the Hotel Utah. It was attended by Bishop Glass, the Catholic Catho-lic clerjjy of the city and by 176 young ladles. The dinner, given by the sodality in honor of the bishop, was one of the most pleasant of the various functions that have been given in honor of the new Romam Catholic prelate. Bishop Glass was greatly touched by the honor accorded accord-ed him auid expressed the hope that he would always receive from the sodality the co-operation and help that his predecessor, pre-decessor, Bishop Laurence Bcanlan, the belovod founder of the sodality, had received. re-ceived. Reception Held. Prior to the banquet an informal reception re-ception was held. In the recelvlriK line were the Right Rev. Joseph S. Glas, C. M., D. O. ; the Very Rev. Father Denis Klely. the Rev. Father J. J. McNally, Mrs. ltd ward McGurrin, Mrs". S. .1. NelHgun. Miss Ka.iherlne Owens. MIhs Mary B-Kiercc B-Kiercc and Miss Margaret Collins. During the evening a beautiful musical programme was given under the direction direc-tion of Miss Genevieve Malone, vioiiniste of St. Mary's cathedral. The programme included harp solos by Mrs. Edward Mc-Gurrin Mc-Gurrin and Miss Lydia White. Several favorite selections of Bishop Glass were played by Mrs. McGurrin, harpist; Miss Frances Douglas, vioiiniste, and Miss Adine Brqwnlee. cellist. Miss Mae O'NeU sang beautii'ully Gounod's "Ave Maria." The blessing was asked by Bishop Glass. The Rev. Father J. J. McNally, spiritual director of the sodality, introduced intro-duced Miss Nora Gleason as toastmistress. In a charming manner Miss Gleason introduced in-troduced herself and those who responded respond-ed to the toasts. Miss Katherine DriscoII spoke of the "Social Influence of the Sodality." So-dality." Miss Margaret McMahon responded re-sponded to the toast "Our Gh'ls." A beautiful beau-tiful tribute to the new bishop of the diocese was paid by Miss Margaret Collins, Col-lins, who spoke on "Our Bishop." Tender Phrases. Tn tender and loving phrases, the Very Rev. Father Denis Kiely spoke of the personal side of the great missionary bishop, l.au retire Scanlan. in responding to the toast, "Our Beioved Founder." Father Kiely was the HfeTong friend and cottns.elor of Bishop Scanlan and lie spoke with deep feeling. The Kev. Father Joseph Jo-seph Sullivan. S. M. of All Hallows college, col-lege, responded to the toast. "The Catholic Cath-olic Societies." Tn a humorous vein, Mrs. John F. Fitzpo trick spoke on "The So-dalist' So-dalist' Suffragette." Miss Anna Rotzler spoke on "Doyalty." Concluding, Bishop Glass spoke briefly in appreciation of the honor paid- him by the sodality. He said that he. realized the honor was not to htm. but to the high position to which he "had been called. He praised highly the work done by the sodality so-dality and exhorted the young ladies to continue the work 1 hey had so well he-gun. he-gun. The new bishop 'paid a tender Tribute to the memory of the late bishop of Salt Duke. |
