The mayoralty race for the coming city election developed into a real contest today with the formal for-mal announcement of candidacy of Abbot R. Hey wood, who will oppose Mayor A. G. PelL Including the Socialist candidates, there are now three candidates In the field for both mayor-commissioner and four-year commissioner. While it was generally understood that Mr. Heywood would he a candidate to succeed Mayor Fell, his announcement at this time was something of a surprise, in that it was believed he would wait until the Republican Repub-lican city convention is held on Thursday evening, September 21. According to Mr. Heywood's statement of candidacy, there Is the intimation that he will not seek the Republican nomination. nomina-tion. He appeals to all citizens, regardless regard-less of their national party affiliations. Meeting places were, announced today for l he Republican primaries lo be held In each of the five municipal wards on Monday evening, September 20. At that time the Republican voters of the seventeen seven-teen voting districts will be expected to name in all 208 delegates to the city convention con-vention on the following night. The designated meeting places are as follows: Ktrst ward, city building; Second Sec-ond ward. Third ward amusement hall; Third ward, Lynne ward amusement hall at Five Points; Fourth ward, county building: Fifth ward. Fifth ward amusement amuse-ment hall. Bach hall will be opened at 7 o'clock and the primaries will be called to order at 7:30 o'clock, according to George J. Kelly, chairman of the "central "cen-tral committee. |
