Show Farms Sold for Rent in Lismore. A dispatch from Lismore on Friday says: The farms of four of the largest tenants in the Thompson-Orpen estate were put up for sale by the landlord in the court house here today. Early this year the adjoining estate of Mr. John C. Wood, Cork, was sold to the tenants on terms of twenty-years' purchase, pur-chase, and as the quality of the land on the Thompson-Orpin estate was exactly ex-actly the same, the tenants on the latter lat-ter estate offered to buy at the same price, but their offer was refused. They were also refused a reduction of their rent, which they demanded in consequence conse-quence of the bad season last year, and they then refused in a body to pay the half year's rent due. Writs were served in October on the four tenants referred to, but as there was. nothing on the land to seize the landlords decided de-cided to put up the farms for sale. The tenants were: Michael T.obin. whose area was 90 acres. 0 roods, ID perches, held at a pudicial rent of 19 17s 6d; William Cashin, area 118a, 2r, 21p. judicial ju-dicial rent. 46, ISs, 6d: Edmond Han-nan, Han-nan, area 55a. Or. 20p, judicial rent, 23, 2s. Od; and James Cunningham, area 12 acres, rent 26. ISs 6d. The conduct of the landlord's representatives caused indignation in the dtetrict and the town was crowded with people today sympathizing sympa-thizing with the tenants. A procession of mounted men and pikemen marched into the town from Ballyduff and the 'surrounding neighborhood, headed by the Ballyporeen Fife and Drum band, playing national airs, the entire proces- sion being headed by the Rev. Fa'ther Moran,,. P. P., and the Rev. Father Dow-lev, Cr C, Ballyduff. Mr. P. J. Power, M. P. for East Wa-terford.'and Wa-terford.'and Mr.'J. J. O'Shee, M. P. for West Waterford, who is acting on behalf be-half of the tenants, were present in court Mr. Hudson, sub-sheriff, offered the farms for sale, and three of them were bought in by his own clerk for the landlord at nominal prices, Mr. O'Shee protesting against this proceeding. Heskin, and others, oth-ers, after which the proceedings were brought to a close by the singing of "God Save Ireland," by Mr. Power, M. P., and the entire assemblage. |
