Show I HELENA; MONT. Andrew O'Connell.'a pioneer and one of the earliest settlers in Hekma. is dead, having passel away at St. John's hospital last Friday, afternoon. Mr. O'Connell went to the hospital about ten days ago and underwent an operation opera-tion Wednesday. He seemed to stand the shock well, but Thursday he began to' fail and never rallied. He was formerly for-merly an officer of the Montana Society Socie-ty of Pioneers and president of the Lewis and Clark Pioneers' association. Andrew .O'Connell was born in Newport, New-port, county: Tipperary, Ireland. March 24, 1831. His father and family came to America during the troublous times of 1S47. . The Independent says: He was a representative rep-resentative pioneer of the vest of the very best type. His migration brought him to the territory of Kansas and out of it before Its admission to the union, lie left Colorado before the expiration of its territorial fHys, and. coming to Montana in its early days, he never ! voted at a presidential election until I after its admission, when he was almost al-most 60 years of age. He had a fund of anecdotes of pioneer life apparently unexhaustible. and when he could be prevailed .upon In 'the company of chosen friends to relate them he became be-came an entertainer of most exquisite charm. He was an omniyerous reader, familiar with the details of all great public questions, on which he always entertained convictions which were the result of study and deliberation. He was devoted to his friends, of generous mind and never self-seeking an upright up-right citizen and a good man. Mrs. Mary Mahoney died suddenly on Tuesday morning at her home on j Lawrence street. She was Si years of j age, and came to Montana in ISTfi from I New York state. In 1S47 Mrs. Hahoney came to the I nited States from Sktill. I Ireland, her birthplace. During her I residence in Helena Mrs. Mahoney made many friends, who admired her ' for her many womanly qualities and rher generous disposition.
