Show U Seeks 3 Acres On Ft. Douglas on the Fort Douglas military reservation res-ervation surplus, it will be transferred trans-ferred to the University. Sen. Frank E. Moss stated, "The Governor's committee, the As soon as the Bureau of Land Management officials in Utah declare de-clare nearly three acres of land University and others involved in the phase-out of Fort Douglas as a military installation are unanimous unani-mous in their recommendation that this particular piece of land should go to the University. The title is needed immediately." Title Needed Now The 2.78 acres of land will be the site of the planned $10 million mil-lion sports and special events center on campus. Title to the land is needed before the University Uni-versity can proceed with financial finan-cial arrangements and construction construc-tion matters. According to the Department of the Army, the land cannot be transferred until June 1967 or later. Since the land was first removed from public domain in 1867, the BLM has been reviewing review-ing the matter to see whether it was suitable for return to the public domain. Army Still Needs Land The land in question is used by the Army for vehicle maintenance main-tenance buildings and will be needed for that purpose until Fort Douglas is phased-out. It was declared surplus in September Sep-tember 1966. Under the Federal Property Act, the General Services Serv-ices Administration can transfer the property to the University without charge, if the Depart ment of Health, Education and Welfare certifies that it will be used in support of educational facilities. Adjacent to the needed land is a 9.91-acre tract of Fort property prop-erty which the University is also seeking for use in construction of the sports and special events center. |
