Show SIDDING'S GALLOPING FIRST TEAM DAZZLE OREGON'S DEFENSIVE LINE The Duck fans in Eugene flight not have liked what they w, but the Ute fans in Salt Lake liked what they heard as ijtah's galloping Redskins sub-ilued sub-ilued Oregon by the score of 17-.4 17-.4 Saturday afternoon in Eugene. The victory marked Coach vlike Giddings' first since he became be-came head coach at the hilltop tichool. r Jittery I Utah combined a slashing running run-ning attack with pinpoint passing pass-ing to eke out the victory. Pre-'iame Pre-'iame fears came true when dur-hg dur-hg the opening moments of the iall game Ben Woodson fum-bled fum-bled the opening kick-off and Oregon's Ken Klein recovered oor the Ducks on the Utah 24. It iooked like Utah was going to be tilown out of the ball game be-ore be-ore they even got their feet tn the ground. ir, Shortly thereafter when a Utah ;jass was intercepted it looked ike Oregon would score again, jit this point Rich Tate intercepted inter-cepted a pass in the Utah end sone to close out Oregon's scoring scor-ing threat. Utah then made a 67-ard 67-ard drive that Oregon stopped 1(n their own 13 where Jerry Kullman kicked a 30-yard field oal to make the score 6-3 for )regon. Then with five minutes ;one into the second period jyoodson made a 30-yard run to et up Utah's first touchdown. Whatever fears Utah fans might have had about Jack Gehrke's ability to move the ball club were quieted Saturday afternoon aft-ernoon as time after time the junior quarterback picked up the necessary yardage on the third down play. Third Victory This victory marked only the third time in eleven meetings with the Ducks that Utah has been victorious. Even though the Utah team was not favored the victory was deserved. Utah completely com-pletely dominated the statistics. This is a tremendous compliment compli-ment to Coach Mike Giddings and his staff. Only last week Oregon had punished Oklahoma on the ground in losing 17-0. The Utes held this same Oregon team to 21 net yards rushing on the ground. Oregon soon realized that their only hope was through the air. It was here that Utah's Jack Gehrke stole the show from Oregon passing veterans Mike Brundage and Tom Trovata. Oregon passers hit 11 of 20 for 174 yards against Gehrke's 10 for 17 and 112 yards. Meanwhile on the ground Utah's fine running run-ning backs led by Gehrke, Ben Woodson, Elward Stewart, Marv Lowery and Doug Wells ran for 191 net yards on the ground. At the same time Utah's defensive de-fensive rushes lead by Bruce Bean, John Stipech, and Pat Mc-Kissick Mc-Kissick forced the Ducks to lose 89 yards on the ground for a net 21 rushing. Woodson himself gained 4 times as much as the entire Oregon running net. He carried 18 times for 88 yards. Utes Dominate Even though Utah dominated the statistics they trailed 14-11 at halftone. Utah came out after the intermission and completely dominated the third quarter and scored the go-ahead touchdown with two minutes and 43 seconds left in the period. During this period Gehrke mixed his plays well, passing to Terry Baker and Mike Butera to drive 56 yards to the score. Jack sliced over tackle from two yards out for the touchdown. After the touchdown, touch-down, the pass to Woodson for two points was complete but Woodson found himself standing out of bounds. This gave Utah the 17-14 edge at the end of the third quarter. Utah held on for a frantic final fi-nal quarter and didn't get out of the woods until a great rush smeared Brundage on his final desperation pass attempt. With 1 minute and 40 seconds showing on the score board clock the Ducks made their final bid for victory, but Utah was not to be denied in handing Coach Mike Giddings his first victory in his first game at Utah. |
