Mrs. Jones was a graduate of College of Southern Utah, now SUSC, and taught for several years in Cedar City elementary schools. She has announced that the oratorio society is now beginning rehearsals in preparation for an April 27 performance of Beethoven's "Mass in C Major" and the Easter portion of Handel's Han-del's "Messiah." The society board has elected Prof. David Nyman of the SUSC Music Department to conduct the Beethoven work. Christine Winterrose, soloist for numerous Cedar City musical productions, will conduct the Handel selections. selec-tions. Mrs. Jones said that members of the orchestra and chorus should plan to attend the first rehearsal for the forthcoming performances on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in the SUSC Music Music Building. Anyone desiring to join the group should contact one of the officers or the newly elected conductors. In addition to Mrs. Jones, officers of the Oratorio society Carol Ann Jones, a former student of Professor Roy L. Halversen, has been elected by the Board of Directors of the Manning-Halversen Oratorio Society to serve as chairman of the organization for the coming year. Mrs. Jones succeeds Forrest Hunter, who has directed the affairs of the society since its founding in 1973. Mr. Hunter resigned from the position in January and was given a vote of appreciation by the oratorio society for the work he has done in organizing the group. The society was formed to perform music of the great composers who have made the oratorio a highly appreciated facet of the world's culture. The Cedar City organization was named in honor of Profs. William H. Manning and Roy L. Halversen who fostered the performance of music of high caliber in the community for more than 50 years beginning in the early 1920's. The new oratorio society chairman has been active in Cedar City music affairs for many years, having begun as a performer with the Southern Utah State College campus-community campus-community orchestra while a student in junior high school. She has also performed with the Cedar City String Quartet on many occasions. She has played in numerous performances of Handel's "Messiah" and w as a member of the orchestra which provided the music this past December for the oratorio society presentation of Bach's "Magnificat." She has served a three-year term as chairman of the Cedar City Music Arts Association and is a member of the Cedar City include Dr. Wesley Larsen, executive secretary, Virginia Stephenson, secretary-treasurer, and Bessie Dover, publicity director. Mrs. Jones also announced a recital to be sponsored by the society in April under the direction of Floyd Rigby and Evelyn Peterson, both of whom performed as soloists for the "Magnificat." All people who are participating par-ticipating in the rehearsal is asked to look for old Messiah scores and return them. |
