Show Dixie College to host debate tourney The words will fly fast and furiously this Friday and Saturday (February 7 and 8) as Dixie College hosts the fourth annual Dixie Classic Debate Tournament. According to Michael L. Woodward, assistant professor of speech at Dixie, approximately 150 students from 14 colleges and universities will compete for speech and forensic honors this weekend, with representation from Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Utah and Colorado. The two-day meet will have three rounds plus a final round in individual events, and five rounds of team debate ending with a final round. Approximately Ap-proximately 18 judges per hour will be used in the two days for all events. Awards are given for first, second and third places in each event, plus a first and second place sweepstakes trophy for institutions. Teams will debate the topic. "Restraining the Power of the President." Areas for individual competition include persuasive speaking, rhetorical analysis, interpretative reading, impromptu im-promptu speaking, extemporaneous ex-temporaneous speaking, after dinner speaking and informative speaking. Professor Woodward indicated that among the institutions planning to attend the meet in St. George in addition to Dixie College are Mesa Community College (Arizona), Glendale Community College, Snow College, College of Eastern Utah, University of Utah, Utah State University, Southern Utah State, Weber State, Brigham Young University, Mesa College (Colorado), Ricks College and Phoenix College. |
