Show History Workshop scheduled this week at College History students, local history buffs, folklore enthusiasts, and anyone interested in writing local or family history is invited to attend a workshop in local history and folklore Thursday and Friday, in the Special Collections Room in the Southern Utah State College Library. Dr. Burt Wilson, folklore specialist from the Brigham Young University will be the featured guest lecturer. Assisting Dr. Wilson will be Dr. Jay M. Haymond, Librarian of the Utah State Historical Society, and Craig Fuller, Field Coordinator Coor-dinator for the Kellog Foundation. Foun-dation. The ten hour course, consisting of eight hours of lecture and two of field work, may be taken without credit or for one hour of undergraduate credit from SUSC. No fee will be required on the non-credit basis; as a credit course, a $10.00 fee will be charged. "This arrangement is possible because the lecturers are donating their time and other expenses of the workshop will be met by its sponsor, the Kellog Foundation," Dr. Haymond, State Historical Society, said. "Joint hosts of the workshop are the Utah State Historical Society, Southern Utah State College, and the History Executive Council, which has been working during the past few years to coordinate historical activities in Iron County and to upgrade the quality of historical writing and research in the area," Inez Cooper, SUSC Special Collections Librarian, said. The schedule for the workshop will be as follows: Thursday, February 6: 1:00 - 1:45-Introduction to Folklore, Dr. Burt Wilson. 2:00 - 2:45-Folklore in life-folk architecture, music, humor, occupational language, legends, etc. 3:00 - 3:45-Use of the tape recorder in gathering folk lore, Craig Fuller. 4:00 - 5:00-Discussion of field work plans for the following day. Friday, February 7: Morning-Two hours or more of field work in gathering local folklore. 1:00 - 1 :45-Evaluation and discussion of field work. Dr. Wilson. 2:00 - 2:45-Folklore architecture ar-chitecture and preservation, Dr. Jay Haymond. 3:00 - 3:45-Historical Implications Im-plications of Folklore, Dr. Wilson. 4:00 - 5:00-Discussion. |
