Show REFERENDUM VOTE - ON SHIPPING BILL WASHINGTON, Feb. 4. The chamber of commerce of the United States ordered a referendum vote of its members here tonight on merchant marine questions, including in-cluding government ownership and operation opera-tion of ships. A majority report, of the chamber's merchant marine committee denouncing the pending ship purchase bill narrowly failed receiving the two-thirds vote needed for adoption ; a minority report also was rejected. The referendum then was decided upon. Secretary McAdoo, for the bill, and Senator Burton of Ohio, against it, were leaders in a debate which lasted all day. |
