Show GOKHT WILL WAGE WflRMI SHARKS Tragedies Along the New Jersey Coast Cause of Excitement. WASHINGTON, July 14. The federal fed-eral government today canvassed its resources re-sources for combatting the invasion of North Atlantic coast waters by sharks. President Wilson and his cabinet discussed dis-cussed what could be done to pi event more tragedies like those which have occurred recently along the New .Terev shore and the coast guard and life saving services were ordered to assist in shark extermination in every way possible. The bureau of fisheries issued a formal statement during the day, advising widespread wide-spread fishing for sharks and warning bathers to keep in shallow water, but admitting inability to advance a cer-: cer-: tainly effective means of preventing fvr- ther attacks. The statement asserted, . however, that there was no reason for panic among seaside bathers. The first effort of the coast guard service ser-vice will be to ascertain whether few individuals or several schools of the sea monsters are in northern waters. A cutter cut-ter will fish for sharks if their number is not great, with the aid of life saving corps. Should a large number be found, more extensive operations may be undertaken. A beach patrol was suggested, to the bureau of fisheries today by Representative Represen-tative Scullv of New Jersey, and Representative Rep-resentative Pacharaet of that state introduced in-troduced a resolution to appropriate $5000 to aid bureau and state authorities authori-ties in the campaign against sharks. Dr. Barton A. Dean, head curator of the fish division of the Smithsonian Institution, In-stitution, said tonight that he thoi ght it possible the attacks upon bathers may have been by sand-sharks, which are extremely ex-tremely aggressive, attain large size and inhabit northern waters.
