The men who, under the cloak of re; ligion and friendship, do their utmost to involve the more credulous of their fellow fel-low men in trouble, and then themselves I take the underground route to nobody- knows-where, leaving their victims to ex-j ex-j tricate themselves as best they can, are rank cowards, deserving only of the execrations exe-crations of honest men. Yet, these same fugitives from justice, from their safe hiding places, have the insufferable impudence im-pudence to occasionally send out letters to the troubled people, exhorting them to remain steadfast to the principles of "the gospel," and beware of the "wolves in sheep's clothing" who would lead them from the true fold only that they might destroy them. Who are these "wolves in sheep's clothing cloth-ing ?" Are they the men who, tired and weary of this everlasting -fight . between the Government and the Church, seek to have the trouble peacefully settled, and only a6k that citizens here shall obey the laws as good citizens everywhere else do? If these are the men, then we say that they 'are the true friends of the people, for they would bring the wayward ones to a full realization of their perilous situation, would help them out of their difficulties, would, if permitted, take their hand and lead them where together they could pay fitting reverence to the flag which floats over the greatest and the freest government govern-ment on God's footstool; would, when freed of the trammels which for so many years have held them in bondage, hail the emancipated ones as brothers in the covenant of loyalty to the Government, caring not what their religious views might be, asking only that they live, as all good citizens must necessarily live, within the laws of the country which pro1 tects them in their lives and their property, prop-erty, and in the pursuit of happiness under those laws. Are these men "wolves in sheep's clothing?" Time will tell. |
