Show The Convict Labor Question. Washington, January 29. The House Committee on Labor to-day instructed Rep-rentative Rep-rentative James to report favorably the bill introduced making it unlawful for any officer offi-cer or agent in the service of the Government of the United States to contract with any person or corporation, or permit any official of any State prison where criminals of the United States may be incarcerated, to hire or contract out the labor of said criminals, and imposing a fine of from $5C3 to $1,000; or imprisonment for "one to two years, for violations of the act. The sub-committee having charge of the convict labor question reported favorably the bill prohibiting I the use of material made by convicts in the construction of government works. The bill is a long one, and the full committee adjourned before concluding ita consideration. |
