Show Considering Silver in Belg-lum. Washington January ' 29. Among the papers transmitted by the President to the Senate, relating to the action of the Belgian government in concluding its- adhesion to the monetary union of the Latin states, was the statement on the subject made by the Prime Minister of Belgium to the Chamber of Representatives, in which he says, in part, "The abrupt withdrawal of Belgium from the Latin Union would have added new and serious elements of disturbance to the difficulties diffi-culties of the present situation. If the union is - to be dissolved at the expiration of the new term fixed, Belgium has five years to prepare for that contingency. The vote of Belgium," says the Premier, "may be relied upon in advance in support of any measure looking to the prolongation of the consolidation and extension ex-tension of the Union; thus the time when losses must be suffered in consequence of the demonetization of silver would be still further postponed, "and a modification, al- ! ways possible, in the relative value of pre- ! oious metals may prevent such losses en- I tirely."-. |
