Thompson has been the head baseball coach at Roy for the past 14 seasons and knows his baseball. "We're just excited to be in the thing," said Thompson, "But now we're here, we'd like to get after some people. We have a lot of respect for Bountiful, especially after the way they got after us in the pre-season game." Thompson said he was aware of the baseball tradition Olsen leads at Bountiful and had nothing no-thing but praise for the Brave mentor. In 1981 Bountiful went all the way and won the state title and a year later finished second. In 1984 and 1985 the Braves finished third in the state event. "The key for us is pitching," said Olsen, "If , ' By KEITH DUNCAN ,BOUNTIFUL It's been a funny season for the Bountiful High baseball crew, but nonetheless, none-theless, Phil Olsen's bunch find themselves exactly where they planned on being last Friday Fri-day when the bats were first drug out. The Braves made it interesting last Friday here with a dramatic come-from-behind victory over the American Fork Cavemen that moved them into the prestigious 4-A tournament which gets underway on Tuesday of this week. The 6-5 victory over American Fork was reminiscent of the entire season for the Braves. Bountiful got of to a good start in the first inning when Tony Smith tripled to drive in a pair of runs, Bountiful scored one more time on a Sid Smith RBI to make it 3-0. : But after a Bountiful error, American Fork scored a couple of runs to make it 3-2 and later tied the game at 3-3 with one more run. In the fifth inning Sharif Hadley singled and we can get our pitchers to go a little longer than they've been going in recent games, we stand a good chance of staying in the thing. "Chad (Rigby) for instance has been going a good four or five innings , but it would be nice to get seven out of him. We've also got to get more out of Chris Fairclough and Kenny Muir." Olsen says he's proud of his kids and never counted them out, even when they got down 2-4 in league play. "After being down like that (2-4 in league) we can now finish no worse than eighth in state," said Olsen. "It's just critical that we get the most we can from our pitchers," said Olsen, "If we expect to do well in this thing, which includes five games in five days, we must get the most from our pitchers." The other pitchers who will see action include in-clude Jason Shaw and Adam Laraby. The rest of the line-up is pretty well set. Sid Smith mans the catcher spot and is the team's leading hitter. Clark Stringfellow plays first base and Ryan Jacobs plays second. At shortstop short-stop is Tony Smith (the team's second leading hitter) and Travis Smith holds down the spot at third. The outfielder includes Rett Anderson in right field, Jimmy Crawford in center and Sharif Shar-if Hadley in left field. was later brought in on a Travis Smith base hit, giving Bountiful the lead 4-3. In the top of the seventh, the Cavemen went ahead 5-4 in a do-or-die situation. Bountiful had their chances to put the game away, but failed to do so. In the bottom of the seventh, Bountiful saw Hadley and Travis Smith reach base on walks. The bases were loaded when Sid Smith drew an intentional base on balls. That brought up Rett Anderson who singled and brought home the winning RBI. On Tuesday the Braves were to have played at 4:30 p.m. against Region One's champion, the Roy Royals. That game was scheduled to have been played at Ken Price in Murray. On Wednesday the tournament was to have shifted north to Derks Field in Salt Lake City. There are eight teams left in the field who will all compete in the double elimination event. : Highland takes on Kearns in the first game at 11:30 p.m. and the second game finds Mountain Moun-tain View and Cyprus going at it. At 4:30 Roy and Bountiful were to play and finally at 7 p.m., Qrem was to tangle with Taylorsville. Bountiful, who is now an impressive 13-4 on the year, had already beaten Fred Thompson |
