Show State soccer playoffs WX3 ViewmoBt advance into third round IS By TOM HARALDSEN WOODS CROSS Defending state soccer champion Woods Cross moved through the opening , two rounds of the year's 4-A state tournament with two completely different types of victories but with the usual results. The Wildcats opened on Wednesday with a thrilling 2-1 victory vic-tory over Clearfield, then blew away Hillcrest 4-0 on Friday night. Woods Cross will now take on Bonneville, who defeated Davis and Skyline in the first two rounds, tonight at 7 p.m. in the championship champion-ship bracket. Meanwhile, Viewmont and Clearfield both overcame first round losses to win consolation games on Friday and stay alive. Viewmont is slated to play Hill-crest Hill-crest this afternoon at 3:30 p.m., while Clearfield will play Skyline at 5:15 p.m. Davis was eliminated Friday afternoon, as Viewmont came from behind for a 4-2 victory over the Darts. Woods Cross opened the tourney tour-ney on Wednesday with the 2-1 win over determined Clearfield. Henry Ihrig began the scoring 10 minutes into the game with a goal, but the Falcons tied the game at half, 1-1. It appeared the Wildcats were a little flat for most of the game. But late in the second half, Tommy Tom-my Angelos drove into the box, fought off two defenders, then passed pas-sed across to Ihrig, who headed in the game winner in the 4 1 st minute. When they needed it, the Wildcats came through. On Friday night, the Wildcats came out fast, beating Hillcrest for all intents and purposes, before halftime and before a thunderstorm drenched the field. Ihrig began the scoring again in the game's fifth minute to make it 1-0. Then just before half, Angelos drilled a shot through Huskie keeper Foy Flinder's hands to make it 2-0. As the rain began falling, Rick Egan scored with two minutes left in the half to make it 3-0 and send a lot of Hillcrest fans packing. Dave Simon added a fourth goal early in the second half to end the story. Bonneville defeated Davis 3-2 on Wednesday, then beat Skyline 2-1 in a shootout Friday evening. Woods Cross is 19-0 on the year, while Bonneville is 14-0-4, making tonight's matchup very interesting. Viewmont dropped a 3-2 contest to Skyline on Wednesday night; as the Eagle's Scott Coulter tallied all three times, including the game winner in the 28th minute of the second half. Viewmont had come back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match on a pair of goals by David Lauder. But the Vikings really came out strong on Friday afternoon. After Davis had taken an early 1-0 lead, Lauder tied the game in the 16th minute on a short shot. Davis made it 2-1 moments later, but in the 22nd minute, Chuck Evans tied the game again at 2-all. Six minutes later, Viewmont was awarded a penalty kick on a "hands" call in the box. Jeff Smith ' converted the shot to make it 3-2. Evans sealed the victory in the 10th minute of the second half with a score to move Viewmont into this afternoon's third round game. Davis exited the tournament after af-ter two games, dropping a 3-2 match to Bonneville before losing to Viewmont. The tournament is scheduled to continue on Thursday and Friday, with the top two remaining re-maining teams meeting Friday at 7 p.m. Should an extra game be needed, it will be played on Saturday Satur-day at 7 p.m. |
