Show i - Clearing out the. mailbox By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor With the spring slowly drawing to a close, it's time to empty the mailbox and clear off the desk again. Here are some interesting tidbits about local athletes: GOLFERS LEAD Amateurs Kurt Bosen and Todd Barker have emerged as the top two golfers in the Utah Golf Association Challenge Cup listings, as of May 12. Both play out of the Bountiful City Golf Course, and lead a list of over 30 amateurs vying for a spot on the Challenge Cup team which will take on the state's top 10 profession- als in September. Bosen leads the standings with 40.60 points, followed by Barker with 35 points. The top 10 amateurs at season's end will be selected for the team. SUSC HONORS Brett Wilkinson of Farmington, and a graduate gradu-ate of Davis High School, has been named the Most Valuable Player on the golf team at Southern Utah State College in Cedar City. Wilkinson, a sophomore, was one of 12 athletes from the school receiving MVP awards during an awards banquet last week. SUSC is making giant steps forward with its athletic programs, moving from the NAI A division divi-sion to NCAA Division II next year, then to Division I status in every sport except football by the 1988-89 season. OFF-ROAD CHALLENGE The sixth annual Off-Road Challenge, co-sponsored co-sponsored by Desert Trackers 4X4 Inc. and the Salt Lake Gun Club, will be held June 1 at the club in North Salt Lake. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the race will start at 10:30 a.m. Vehicles will be checked for proper equipment, and numerous classes will be eligible for awards, including three and four wheelers. More information can be obtained by calling 45 1-0325 or 250-4543. Race organizers say the event will be held rain or shine. COACH OF YEAR UPDATE With our first Coach of the Year contest almost over, it's been interesting to hear some of the comments made about the contest. Like most everything else we do at the Clipper, 98 percent or more of the comments have been positive, particularly from those with clubs or little league teams who have viewed the contest for what it was suppoed to be-a fun event to develop some team spirit and competitiveness. But regardless of who wins when we count the final ballots this weekend, it's important to point out that this contest is, and was meant to be, nothing more than a popularity contest. Certainly naming the "Best" coach of the year is not something done through random balloting ballot-ing of the public. We simply wanted to see who the most popular coaches were, and so far, with more than 40 named, there are a lot of coaches out there who have strong followings. It has proven to be a good way of giving recognition to some of those "unsung" hereoes who work in little league or at club levels, and we'll probably do it again next year. CONGRATULATIONS IN ORDER Though the state playoffs still await, congratulations con-gratulations to the Bountiful baseball team and Woods Cross soccer team for winning Region Four titles this year. Also to the tennis duo of : Troy Anderson and Josh Johnson of Bountiful, ' who made it to the finals in state 4-A tennis and were our area's most successful tennis representatives. repre-sentatives. Good luck to all the athletes involved in state playoffs, and in the state track meet this weekend at Weber State. |
