Show EDITORIALS Is Property Tax System Fair? SOMEONE recently said that the present property tax system sys-tem is unfair and oudated because the people it hits hardest hard-est are the ones who are the least able to pay. As we look around us at the people who own, and are buying homes, it is evident that the majority of them are in no position to pay heavy property taxes. The taxes are so high in certain areas that it is a real discouragement to home ownership. The . people who need homes are those with a growing family. They are the ones who need every available penny for the proper rearing of their children. And yet, if they choose to build or buy a home in any desirable neighborhood, they are overwhelmed with a large property tax. Since the southeast is the focal point for most of the home building currently being done in Salt Lake Valley, southeast-erners southeast-erners should take special interest in demanding revision of the property tax system. Many of the wealthiest people , those best able to pay taxes have relieved themselves of all property in the form of home ownership in order to avoid the tax. |
