Show 'Miss S. H." Contest Going Strong The 1949 Miss Sugar House contest is well ahead of schedule, sched-ule, Richard W. James, contest chairman, announced Thursday, with over twenty candidates already al-ready signed up. Compared with the two previous years, the entry en-try list is bulging at this early date. In the other years contestants did not begin flooding in until near the contest's close. This year, however, 23 girls had entered in less than a week. "We expect to see the entry list exceed thirty," Mr. James stated. Significant aspect of the current contest is the cooperation coopera-tion individual business houses are giving the committee. By Thursday half of the entries had been sponsored by local stores. From all indications another five or six would sponsor candidates candi-dates before deadline Monday at 6 p.m., the chairman said. The Sugar House committee has considered the problem of certain stores who know of no girls to sponsor, Mr. James said. Therefore, his committee has accepted applications of individual indi-vidual girls who will be assigned to stores desiring a candidate. "There is no obligation on the part of either the store or thp girl," the chairman explained. By "sponsoring" a candidate the store merely adds its support to the community - sponsored contest. The girl merely accepts the name of the store as her sponsor. Two changes were made in the original rules set up by the committee on Monday: Individual Indi-vidual applications were okeyed and the limits of residence for the candidates were extended from 13th to 9th South and from 5th to 4th East. Purpose of the change was to give more stores and more applicants a chance at the coveted "Miss Sugar House 1949" title. Miss Sugar House candidates will meet Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the South East Furniture Fur-niture Co. where they will hear instructions from committee heads. At this time local fashion store heads will draw for names to determine which girls will model their clothes in the Friday niirht modeling fete. Judges of the contest will be chosen this week, Mr. James stated, but will not be named until next week. Points on judging judg-ing will be given for beauty of face and figure and general grace. |
