Paul Murphy Heads People's Ticket As Mayor Candidate I Roosevelt City was assured of a contest in the forthcoming i municipal election as approximately approxi-mately 40 representative citizens citi-zens of the community met at the American Legion Barracks last Thursday night to form a new party and select candidates for mayor and two city council-men. council-men. Chosen as the two council nominees were C. N. (Cliff)-Memmott (Cliff)-Memmott and E. Dwain Buchanan. Bu-chanan. Dr. R. V. Larson acted aS temporary chairman and announced an-nounced the purpose of the meeting was to organize a new party and select candidates to contest for the office of mayor and two councilmen. Chosen as party chairman was Dr. Paul Stringham, with Mrs. Cliff Memmott Mem-mott as secretary. Merlin Sullivan Sulli-van was appointed by Chairman Chair-man Stringham as campaign manager. A platform committee was also appointed consisting of Dr. Larson, Lynn Johnstun and Mrs. Wesley Dickerson, who will serve with the candidates and officers in formulating a campaign platform. The new mayor candidate is' assistant manager of the Commercial Com-mercial Bank of Utah and has served the past four years on the city council. He has long been prominently identified with the Boy Scout movement,-and movement,-and is currently serving as' vice-president of the National Parks Council and was awarded award-ed the Silver Beaver for his contribution to Scouting. He is also serving as a member of the high council in the Roosevelt Roose-velt stake and is president of the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Buchanan is a native of Sevier County and for the past four years has been manager of Christensen's Department Store here. A member of the Lions Club, he is serving as vice-president and as a director in the Chamber of Commerce. He is a counselor in the Roosevelt stake Sunday School, and with his wife are regional dance di- . rectors for the MIA in the four ' Basin stakes. The other council candidate, Mr. 1 Memmott, is editor and publisher of the Roosevelt Standard Stan-dard and Uintah Basin Record, having acquired the two newspapers news-papers in the fall of 1950. Active in the church, he is president of the Roosevelt stake mission. Previously the Progressive Party had selected Attorney George Stewart as their mayor candidate, with Clem Labrum and Floyd R. Peterson as council coun-cil nominees. All are successful professional and business men of Roosevelt and are active in civic affairs. |
