Show Union Takes F.loab 38-6; One More 17m Means Title There is one sure thing i Moab will not represent Region Five in the class B playoff series ser-ies coming up November 6 or 7, a position they enjoyed last year when they won the football honors in the region. Coach Horace Gillespie's Cougars from Union High school defeated the last year champs by the decisive score of 36-6 last Friday afternon on the Cougars' field. Moab just didn't have it, and the Cougars were playing one of their best games of the season as they out ran, out passed and out kicked the kids from Grand County. Coach Gillespie started his first string against Moab and . with Packy Fenn reeling off a couple long runs, assisted by a pass from Gib Harris to Gerald Hatch, end, the the Cougars put over two touchdowns in the first period. From this point on every Cougar on the bench, except the wa.ter boy, played a lot of football. The refreshing thing about the experiment, the second, sec-ond, and third string taems played play-ed impressive football. Without taking anything from the fine playing of such good boys as Packy Fenn, Albert Col-lotzi, Col-lotzi, Jack Adams, Gordon Eld-redge, Eld-redge, Milton Mecham. they just weren't missed in the lineup line-up as the junior and sophomore kids came through with some inspired in-spired football, to keep1 the TDs rolling along. A smooth running, hard blocking block-ing halfback, Larry Allred, who has been used mostly on defense de-fense during the previous games, was easily the outstanding ball player on Coach Gillespie's team Friday. This youngster figured I in just about every scoring play for the Courgars all afternoon. If he wasn't making a lot of yards, as a ball carrier, he was blocking like a veteran. Another fine looking youngster was Orson Or-son Giles, who scored twice and turned in various long runs for the winners. We also liked the field generalship of Charley Denver, junior quarterback. In fact those kids who will be carrying the Black and Gold colors next year all looked like comers. Moab's only score of the game came late in the third quarter after they made a sustained drive from Union's 40 -for a TD. Their' attempted kick -for extra point was short. The Cougars scored in every period and led 26-0 at the end of the first half. Final League Game At Uintah This week the Cougars played a Wednesday game at Rangely, Colorado. Their final league game will be at Uintah on Oct. 30. If they win that one they'll have the Region 5 title all sewed up. However, if the Utes beat the Cougars, and this week win their game at Moab, they can tie with Coach Gillespie's lads for the title. Word was received this week by Principal L. . F. Hutchings down at Union that the playoff between Region 5 and the Sanpete-Millard winner will be played on the home field of this region. Thus if the Cougars win the title Roosevelt will be the site of a playoff between either Millard, three-time state B champs or Wasatch Academy, first B team to beat the Millard Eagles in three years (they won a 27-20 game last Friday). The playoff will be bn either November Nov-ember 6 or 7. |
