Show 4 CLIFF MBMMOTT. EdUor , HONOR COMES TO UNION HIGH IS ACCREDITED INSTITUTION .... Within the past few days Loman F. Hutchings, prinei- pai of Union High School, received a certificate from the Northwest Association of Secondary and High Schools certifying that Union High School had been approved for membership in the association, and was entitled to display their official "Accreditation Certificate," for 1951-52. When one considers that back as far as September 1, 1951, Union High was still an untried and unorganized ' secondary school, which had a long way to go before it ' became an institution. . . it's amazing the progress this new institution has made, and reflects credit on the principal and faculty who are rapidly making it one of Utah's better schools. ; A very thorough survey was made, under the direction of William P. Miller, assistant state superintendent of pub- lie instruction, of Union High, which included a study of i buildings, library' and laboratory facilities; personnel, bud-f bud-f get, policies, and . various other forms of standards. His ' recommendation was the final word in the investigation made by NASHS. Too much praise can not be heaped upon the heads of the principal, faculty and the board of education for making Union High School an institution worthy of this great honor ..." something most unusual f or: a new school in its first year. - i . . v E v LOCAL SCHOOL OFFICIALS GET ADVICE ON "GAMBLING" IN SPORTS . . . f Wednesday morning high school and district school officials of-ficials of Duchesne County, including Union High School, made a request that something be said editorially on a problem prob-lem that during the past several months has caused a great amount of investigation nationally, and has brought the U.S. Attorney General, J. Howard McGrath, into the picture. "Gambling In Sports,'', is the caption of a bulletin the Utah State Athletic Association sent to all school heads in the state, urging a vigilant fight to keep the gambling evil out o Utah schools. , It's true that little communities such as the ones in the Uintah Basin where our high schools are located at the moment haveutlie i AVry abouv. But, powerful gangs , have been known "to get their start in a small town , where vice was just a word in Webster's dictionary. '" . There is nothing more demoralizing to a young athlete j who has literally fought his heart out to win a olean victory, j than to have someone thoughtlessly say, "I lost $20.00 on , i your team last night." Oftimes the word gets around that ) "so-an-so sure lost a slug of dough" on the last high school game, and actually no' one was guilty of such a thing. . . , A bit of "Bet" jesting is too often taken seriously. jj In fact two rominent Roosevelt business men last week j had just such an experience. So the story goes, as it; was told to me by one of them who had a $100 bill a lot ? of talk went on about the two of them offering to bet each ! other a hundred dollars on the Vernal-Union game. All that was done and said was said and done , in a jesting manner, neither bet a dollar. The advice passed on to the school officials is worth considering and all of us have an obligation to Our young athlets not to do anything that might tend to give them the idea that they are objects of gambling. . . It's such a short road from there to the very thing that happened in the East to collegiate basketball. ... v E v - .'
