Show Osast To Coast Hiker Stops flt Elesord ffisa John Frey, 59 year old hiker from Switzerland, Is walking 1 from New York to San Fran- cisco, every inch of the way. He is a jolly little fellow who carries a pack that is almost as big as he is. The 32-lb. pack 1 has a big sign that reads, "Please, No Lift, Walking to San Francisco." He stopped at the Basin Record office for a chat Monday Mon-day morning and had a very strange story to tell. He left New York City on the first of April, has traveled for 110 days, averaging 22 miles a day, and he expects to arrive in San Francisco the middle of October. Mr. Fry has special shoes, made for the trip. He had one pair that lasted from New York to Marselles, 111. He sent them back to Switzerland for laboratory labor-atory study. Another pair will come to him before he leaves ' Utah. The interesting thing is J that he has never had a blister on his feet. Mr. Frey is a lecturer and author, and is writing a book called "The Great Walk." This he will take back to Switzerland, Switzer-land, and continue his lecturing. lectur-ing. This little man is as brown as a berry, lives most of the time on uncooked oatmeal, when he is on the road. He carries car-ries in his knapsack an air mattress, mat-tress, toilet articles, a wool blanket, blan-ket, scrapbook of paper clippings clip-pings about his hike, and a canteen can-teen of water. He eats better when he goes to a town, but says oatmeal is very nourishing. The Governor of Nebraska has given him a letter of introduction intro-duction to Governor J. Bracken Lee, and the Tribune will meet him in Salt Lake City and ar range for him to' appear on television. tele-vision. He has been on many programs in other cities, also. Mrs. Frey plans to go over the desert, on Highway 40, to Reno, but says the heat won't bother him, as he travels in the early morning and evenings, rests and sleeps during the day. The above facts about this unusual hiker have proved most interesting to all whom he encounters, en-counters, and all are wishing him luck and success in his spectacular adventure. t S ' It.. - ' r .', I I " .
